A Magnificent Catastrophe Summary
A Magnificent Catastrophe
The Tumultuous Election of 1800, America’s First Presidential Campaign With the recent election of 2016, I have began to wonder if the political process of electing the nation’s president has always been so divided, ugly, and absolutely chaotic. I wondered if politicians have always been so corrupt and belligerent, and I wondered if there have been more elections where our nation has been forced to pick the lesser of two evils (unless, of course, you felt strongly for one candidate or the other which can be very troubling to imagine when presented with the character and decisions of the last two candidates). Author of A Magnificent Catastrophe, Edward J. Larson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, wildly illustrates

Larson writes “They could write like angels and scheme like demons” (pg. 1). Two men who were once such great friends had no remorse when turning their backs on each other and doing everything in their power to make sure the other would not succeed in the election of 1800. Scheming took over the election and I’m left to wonder, towards the end of the campaign, how much of their time was spent working towards bettering the nation and how much was spent planning their next big attack on their fellow candidate. 1. A) The problem with the election in 1800 was that it wasn’t much of an “election” at all. Newspapers, at the time, were mostly partisan, and weren’t concerned with telling the truth all the time. Also, because of their lack in technology, campaigning was almost impossible for presidential candidates, so not much was done to campaign their running of office. Bottom line, there were NO primaries, NO nominating conventions, NO candidate speeches, and NO entourage of reporters. The 1896 election’s main problems came from our precious medals. The Republican’s major issue was to support for the gold standard and high tariffs. It linked money to the scarce amount of gold so debtors never got a break from inflation. The Democrats, on the other hand, had the issue of unlimited coinage of sliver. The issue with the 2000 election was that they overruled the Florida Supreme Court and held that more precise and consistent standards for evaluating ballots would have to be applied to all counties. What came with that, was they also ruled that there wasn’t enough time to recount all the ballots before the electors were to vote, so they never really knew who really won the election, just what the U.S. Supreme Court ruled.…

The election of 1800 marked the beginning of a 28-year period during which Republicans dominated national politics.
