1.0 INTRODUCTION 2.1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) was originally domesticated in tropical America (CIP Program Report 1999 – 2000.). The exact center of origin and domestication of the sweetpotato has not been well defined, neither has the wild ancestor of this species been found. Based on the numerical analysis of key morphological characters of sweet potato and the wild Ipomoea species, Austin (1988) postulated that sweet potato originated in the region between the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and the Orinoco River in Venezuela, within which the four major American taxa of the batata group are distributed.

Worldwide, sweetpotato is the sixth most important food crop after rice, wheat, potatoes, maize, and cassava. In developing countries, sweet potato is the fifth most important food crop. More than 105 million metric tons are produced globally each year; 95% of which are grown in developing (CIP 2010).Maize is the main food crop and occupies 70 percent of the cultivated land but of late sweet potato (ipomoea batatas) and cassava (manihot esculenta) have gained importance as food crops (C.C Moyo et al

Jonathan Swift’s ‘A Modest Proposal’ is a brilliant example of irony that was employed in the writing of late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Swift in his essay mounts aggravation at the deplorable state of Ireland due to England’s exploitation and also expresses disgust for the Irish people for not mobilizing on their own behalf (Britannica Encyclopedia). Without excusing any party, he criticizes not only the English or the Irish landed elites but also the masses for the dreadful condition of the country. Written to address the general public in 1729, the essay ‘proposes’ that in order to reduce poverty in Ireland, the children of the lowly should be sold as food to the wealthy. This will not only lower the population but also provide income to the poor. The style of Swift’s writing, the structure and detail of his scheme, the value laden language and metaphoric examples help him accomplish his task.…

Wild potato species occur throughout the Americas from the United States to southern Chile.[3] The potato was originally believed to have been domesticated independently in multiple locations,[4] but later genetic testing of the wide variety of cultivars and wild species proved a single origin for potatoes in the area of present-day southern Peru and extreme northwestern Bolivia (from a species in the Solanum brevicaule complex), where they were domesticated approximately 7,000–10,000 years ago.[5][6][7] Following centuries of selective breeding, there are now over a thousand different types of potatoes.[6] Over 99% of the presently cultivated potatoes worldwide descended from varieties that originated in the lowlands of south-central Chile, which have displaced formerly popular varieties from the Andean highlands.[8][9]…

Today, the country faces extremely high cost for food especially in vegetables. To satisfy hunger, cultivation of crops was discovered as a better way to secure food of a family. However, crop improvement has resulted to cultivation of crops that perform well even under hot climate of tropical areas which are typical for most cities in the Philippines. The challenge to find alternatives and practical ways of growing crops is pursued because of the rapid urbanization rate of the country that leads to minimal space for growing crops. It is also noticeable that the vegetables bought in the markets are seldom available as fresh because they are grown in very distant places.…

INTRODUCTION Reliable and timely data base is the basic necessity for any sound and systematic planning. Moreover, the availability of detailed information, preferably at Micro level is the key for effective planning. Though a fairly adequate system of agricultural statistics has already been developed in the country, such an information system has not yet been built up for the Non-Agricultural Sector, especially in un-organized sector though it assumes greater importance due to its significant contribution towards Gross Domestic Product and also in generation of employment in developing economy. But this data relating to this segment which would facilitate fair assessment of its share in the National/State Income and also its impact on the growth of income and employment are either scarce or not available at regular intervals.…

Some 1,000 varieties of banana trees have been identified in more than 150 countries, producing around 105 to 120 million tonnes (Mt) of fruit a year. There are two main families: the sweet banana or “fruit”, essentially the Cavendish variety, which represents around 60 to 65 Mt (3) , and the cooking banana - particularly the “plantain” in Africa or the “pisang awak” in Asia - consumed more as a vegetable, which represents around 40 to 50 Mt (4) . Both are mainly autoconsumed as only around 14 Mt of fruit bananas, generating $ 7.9 billion (2009), are traded internationally. Exports of the plantain banana are increasing but still remain a little known and limited market compared with the fruit banana.…

It is reasonable to assume that plant breeding, howsoever primitive, began when man first chose certain plants for cultivation; this began 10,000 years ago when main is believed to have started agriculture. The processes of bringing a wild species under human management are referred to as domestication. During the long period of prehistoric and historic cultivation, natural selection has definitely acted on the domesticated species. It is likely that man also exerted some selection wither knowingly or unknowingly. Movement of man from one are to another brought about the movement of his cultivated plant species. The introduction into an area of new plant species or varieties from other parts of the world is an integral part of plant breeding today.…
