When people talk about great teachers, they often reference some historically famous teachers such as Aristotle, Anne Sullivan, Maria Montessori, William McGuffey, Emma Willard, and Jaime Escalante (McGasko 2013). After watching the 2003 film, School of Rock, I consider the case of Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher played by the incomparable comedic actor, Jack Black.
Dewey starts off the story with an obsession of putting together a formidable rock band that could win the “Battle of the Bands”. Soon after, he noticed his students practicing in their classical music class. He realizes that although many of them had tremendous talent, none of them seemed inspired. He then decides to create what he calls a “class project” in which the students would become his new band that would compete against No Vacany and others in the upcoming Battle of the Bands. Dewey starts doing things differently; he begins teaching, mentoring, and encouraging his students not only how to play rock classics like “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC, but to be excited about playing also (School of Rock …show more content…
They are able to challenge our beliefs and mobilize us to action. They capture our imagination with grand visions of what could be” (Tewksbury 2013). Towards the end of the movie, Dewey is at the school’s parent-teacher conference. While there, the parents begin question him about their children’s new interest in music. The police appear shortly after, exposing Dewey. He then comes clean about everything, reveals his true identity, and is then fired. Despite what happened the night before, the students still want to compete in the Battle of the Bands, so they skip class and request that Dewey still lead them. He inspired them to finish what they started and do it for themselves rather than anyone else. I want to inspire my students in a similar fashion. I learned the concept of inspirational motivation in a leadership course. Exceptional leaders employ inspirational motivation, but that is no different than what the best teachers
