A Once Concussed Athlete
This article provided me insight on how a once concussed athlete should be evaluated when in the process of returning back to play. I have seen multiple friends of mine tell my former coach that they no longer have these concussion-related symptoms, and my coach would immediately put them back onto the soccer field. One of my friends actually got another concussion the day of returning from a previous concussion. I believe that some coaches are so concerned about winning that they will find any way to put the once or still concussed player back onto the field, especially if that particular player is an important asset on the field.

His brother inspired Rueben to speak Spanish so he was also learning Spanish at the time of his concussion had occurred. It is still not decided if he will be able to play soccer again but as he told his coach. “Coach, it’s my passion. It’s the one thing I want to do for my career,” Nsemoh explained. His coach Bruno Kalonji said that Nsemoh’s concussion was by far the worst he has ever seen. But one thing is for sure, that if Reuben Nsemoh does come back to play soccer he will definitely have to wear a helmet. Doctors recommend that even if a player has 2 or three concussion they should be wearing a helmet. A concussion could even happen during practice so it will be mandatory for a player to wear a helmet at all times while…

The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and opinions on concussions of high school coaches from a geographi- cally large yet rural state in the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States. Few medical issues in sport are more important, or have had as much publicity recently, as concussions. The exposure gleaned from tragic health issues among professional athletes post- concussion has motivated college and professional sport agencies to modify and enact strict guidelines in the diagnosis and treatment of suspected concussions. Yet underdiagnosis and mistreatment by some (former University of Michigan coach in 2014) highlight the need for continued education and enforcement of the current guide- lines. Obviously, when a head…

A concussion is a serious neurological injury cause by a blunt force to the head. A concussion can cause memory loss, loss of coordination, and can lead to CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy which causes several painful, and debilitating side effects, and will ultimately lead to and early death, when left untreated by a professional doctor. There is no certain recovery length, but it requires lots of rest, and restrictions on activity, there may also be a need to immobilize the head to prevent more trauma to the brain. As concussion are so common in almost all sports, most people don’t give them a second thought to intense recovery, but that could be a fatal mistake. Without proper recovery, the soccer player could end up like Jeff Astle, a famous American player who, in 2002, who died suddenly at the age of 59. Astle was diagnosed posthumously with CTE, which most likely caused his untimely death.…

Due to improvements in technology and our scientist we are starting to realize and go deeper into how severe a concussion is or traumatic brain injury (TBI). By definition, a concussion occurs when there is a rapid acceleration or deceleration of the head. The brain moves or rotates inside the skull and different parts of it move against each other. Symptoms include headaches, confusion, amnesia and sensitivity to light or noise and can last days, weeks or months. Coaches play a huge role in concussion prevention as they are the ones with the authority to pull an athlete if symptoms appear. However, even though they must go through the concussion training course, many still do not know the major risks of the brain injury, especially with football providing such large collisions to the head. More thorough training is needed to show them the true risks, teaching the importance of concussion precautions and why they cannot tell a kid to shake it off and keep playing. It would be beneficial to teach the coaches the long term effects of a concussion as well, making them realize how brutal the injury actually is, and that players do not always fully recover from it. The signs are another important factor for coaches to know so they can determine whether to pull an athlete out of the game. During the training, they must be informed of the visible brain injury symptoms such as appearing dazed, losing consciousness, and must analyze the eyes for crossing, limited movement, or pupil constriction (“Symptoms”). Symptoms such as headache, confusion, dizziness, ringing ears, or blurry vision should also be known in case the athlete mentions having any after a blow to the head or body. Last, the coach must have a concussion plan, knowing what to do in a situation where…

Officials and trainers of lacrosse urge that any player suspected of having a concussion be removed from the game and not permitted to play again until they have been cleared by an appropriately trained professional (Lincoln). This is something that many people feel is common sense, but the reality is that this does not always happen. Based on U.S. Lacrosse rules, a player should not return within 1-3 weeks after obtaining a concussion (Lincoln). The rules state that a player should sit out longer and longer periods of time after receiving a concussion as the brain has already been previously damaged. Not only should coaches be reminded of these rules, but players as well. A player needs to be cleared by a medical professional first before entering the game. Many athletes try to push away their injuries in order to return back to the game, though this leads to further damage that can result in permanent absence from playing and even death. Concussions are a large concern, which is why there are many discussions upon the topic. Athletes need to learn to take care of their bodies before, during and after injury in order to help with future development. Another way U.S. Lacrosse wants to cut down on injuries is to have stiffer penalties for aggressive and dangerous plays (Lincoln). This means that after a check to the head there are automatic yellow cards, and even reds in some situations. The athletic world can not truly rely on a piece of equipment to solve the problem. This is an issue that needs to be further dealt with by players, parents, coaches, officials and…
