A & P By John Updike Summary

During the allegory A&P, John Updike vividly gives the reader details that paints the perfect picture. His description of the characters and the scenery portrays a true to life scenario. John Updike writes this short story in first person where Sammy is the protagonist. Being the protagonist Sammy shows some not so admirable traits at the beginning of the story. John Updike paints Sammy to be a young kid still finding his way. Sammy is portrayed to be an extremely arrogant, self-centered kid who is very much full of himself. He tries to become the hero of the day by defending the same girls he was just criticizing, so that he could get the attention of Queenie. Soon enough Sammy realizes that the power that girls have and his desire for Queenie
