A Price Too High John Ham Analysis

In both stories dialogue shows the character's true self because they say things that they don’t show, and they can show feelings in tone of voice. In the story “A Price Too High” by Jon Ham. Jim is faced with a difficult decision, to steal his friends money or not too. Jim thinks about it but is very timid about trying to steal it. But eventually he does. When his friend questions him he begins to get nervous, and he shows his true character. For example the Jim states,”’We are friends’” (Ham 18). This shows that Jim regrets his choices. More evidence of this is the title of the story, “A Price Too High”. This shows Jim thinks that it was a mistake stealing the money because he lost a friend. Although this isn't dialogue it still shows how
the character feels in a way. To conclude Jim shows that he is sorry through dialogue, but his friend betrays him.
In the story, “Best Friends Forever?” By Julian Green dialogue plays a big role on how the characters express themselves. Samara for example has changed a lot in the course of time that they have been apart. For example Izzy says,”’What’s your soccer team like in Colorado’. ‘Actually I don’t play soccer anymore’” (Green 7-8). This shows how the girls have changed over the course of two years. The author shows us that the girls have changed subtly through dialogue. Another example of this is when Samara is talking about her favorite band but Izzy doesn’t like that band anymore. This shows again that the author wants us to know that they are changing without really saying up front. All in all dialogue in this story gives us clues about the events that will end the story because of their actions.
