Before the drama starts Mama’s husband dies and they are waiting to receive a $10,000 life insurance check. When the check came in, and she held it in her hand, she felt mournful. That check represented her husband, Walter, and everything he worked his whole life for. Although she knew she could follow out the dreams that she has had in store for her family, This check would never replace him. Mama isn’t the only one who feels angrily towards Walter’s action. It took effect on the whole family and their dreams. Beneatha is disappointed in the fact that she now doesn’t have any college money and Ruth is heartbroken because she now feels that without the money she would be incapable in providing for her unborn baby, making her have to rethink about abortion.
The Younger family, especially Mama, were used to enduring hardship. The loss of money wasn’t going to let them lose their pride or hope. They picked themselves up and on moving day, and they left their old apartment empty, so that they could continue with their plans to live in Clybourne Park.
By the end of the play the family put all of their individual dreams aside because they realized that nothing could be more important than having a strong family to lean on. I feel that was Mama’s whole purpose in the play. She keeps the family strong by setting a strong foundation for her family, so that she can keep everyone steering in the right
