To Walter this is a dead end job and wants to make something better for himself. But he is fighting society because black men were thought to be not good enough to have a high end paying job. That is the whole reason that he wants to open up a liquor store, so that Walter can show that even though he is black he can make name for himself. But, society back then did not want so much of that. For a black person to open up a store in a white community was not a good idea. Mama worked in a kitchen and so did Ruth. They were both working for the white people. Even though slavery had already ended it was still the white people's way of using the African Americans. During the play in act one scene two, Beneatha gets a phone call from her friend Asagai who is from Africa. She invites him over to the house. When Asagai arrives Mama apologizes for the house being a mess. Beneatha worried about the family asking idiotic questions about Africa. Even though they were African American, they did not know a lot about Africa itself. That is the same thing how the whites were. They were around African Americans, but they did not know anything about their heritage or where they came from. Most white folks did not want to know
