Once he saw Annabel, he instantly loved her and turned into Ralph D. Spencer. One lesson the story suggests is when people fall in love, they change into somebody else for the greater good. At the beginning of the story Jimmy Valentine was a professional robber. Then once he saw Annabel he turned into Ralph D. Spencer, a shoe store owner. I am interested in researching the urban legend of John Henry. The legend of John Henry is about an African American male who manually works on a railroad with a hammer and was proud of his work. Others working on the railroad could not match or exceed John Henrys capabilities as it pertained to hammering railroad spikes. It usually took three workers to do the same job that he could do all by himself, just that alone caused a lot of jealousy and animosity for some people. This topic is important to me because it shows that John Henry was determined to prove that man is greater than machine.…

The word backslide is not a word commonly used today, many Christians believe that they can backslide. Others believe that no matter what they do they cannot lose their salvation; both of these ideas are partially correct. Veriest pieces of old literature talk about the theory of backsliding such as, The Bible, Westminster Confession of Faith and Pilgrims Progress. Backsliding can be defined in many different ways, however the definition most commonly used is “Turning away from God to pursue their desire” (Wikipedia.org). It is important to note that turning away from God is different from losing your salvation. Devoted Christians in no way can lose their salvation which God has given them through his love. A devoted Christian is a believer…

The church’s unyielding grip on religious expression shattered as medieval society transitioned into a period known as the Reformation. Characterized by the rejection of common ritual and ideology, the Reformation sparked a different degree of religious curiosity. The Reformation forced the church to adhere to religious tolerance, allowing Europeans to discern for themselves what they believed. Hence, it was natural that an era considered the Age of Enlightenment followed the period of rejection and questioning known as the Reformation. The Enlightenment marked the beginning of academic and religious philosophy and allowed great minds to think free from restriction and condemnation.…

Oates presents to the readers Connie. Using Connie’s thoughts, the author makes it clear that her surface-level perception of those she meets causes her not to care for people on a deep level, but rather what they are to her and only her. The morning after she spent time with her friend at the mall, Connie reflects on what happened. When she thinks about the boys she met last night, “...all the boys fell back and dissolved into a single face that was not even a face,” (657). We see here that Connie, without a second thought, removes the individuality and personality from these boys.…

During the early 1500’s, three theological philosophies came to recognize the Reformation: Sola gratia, sola fide, and sola scriptura. Sola gratia (Latin, ‘grace alone’ or ‘by grace alone’) this highlights that salvation occurs by God’s ‘grace alone’. Sola fide (Latin, ‘faith alone’ or ‘by faith alone’) is alike in that it stresses that people accept God’s gracious offer of salvation by (or through) ‘faith alone’. Sola scriptura (Latin, ‘scripture alone’) emphasizes that ‘scripture alone’, rather than church authority or human opinion, represents religious authority. It is sometimes called the ‘formal principle’…

The Reformation was a large, unique movement away from the Catholic Church in 16th and 17th century Europe. Starting with Martin Luther being the first to officially oppose the theology of the Catholic Church, he posted his work, 95 Theses, to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. This act allowed for multiple movements away from the Catholic Church, consequently creating multiple new religions, some of which remain today. Some movements began with the sole idea of rectifying the Christian religion, while others were seen as an opportunity for gain of power or in umbrage of a political adversary. Due to the unmitigated diversity of each distinct reforming sect, the Reformation as a whole is to be considered as both a religious…
