Bullets Over Broadway is a must see musical. Every aspect of the show is perfect. The opening scene is staged at a night club with dancing girls and lustful men. As the girls sing and dance in their seductive ways, they begin to introduce themselves. Standing out in this tigerous crowd was a woman named Olive. Olive is a …show more content…
peculiar individual and tends to draw attention to herself but not in the most charming or alluring way. She wants to be an actress and soak up the spot light; although, she is not cut out for the part. Her lover Nick on the other hand, has the money as well as the power to make her a “star” for, he owns the night club and provides her with attention even though her stage performance is horrendous. Nick hears along the grape vine that David, a young playwright, is going to be presenting his new play to the public. Nick makes the arrangements for Olive to become an actress for real, but upsets the famous actress Helen Sinclair who is to be the main character of David’s play. In the meantime David’s girlfriend, Ellen, wants to be married so drama between David’s work and Ellen’s dream also come into the plot. David later goes to meet Olive at her apartment and Olive provides him with reassuring reasons as to why she is perfect for his play. Olive being the individual that she is, sexually scares David into making her the lead and scars him for life. Rehearsal for the play begins and Nick assigns Cheech, one of the leaders of Nick’s gang, to be Olive’s personal body guard and to keep her insight at all times. As the musical carries on, David finds himself in professional and sexual trouble, Cheech expresses a deep inner secret desire, and Olive continues to be the dramatic actress wanna be.
Bullets Over Broadway had wonderful lighting that made the show come to life.
For instance, in the scene where Cheech goes to the Lazy River, the lighting effects made the audience feel as if they were looking into the murky water. The cool colors of blue and gray gave the scene a dark and eerie mood. Lighting was also effective during the night club scenes in that it provided a feeling of temptation and lust. I think that it is important to note that the backdrop for this musical was very simple; therefore, the lighting is what made each scene realistic. In response to costumes, they were very 1929 New York like with some modern style. For the men, mostly suits and casual everyday clothes such as, tan pants with sweaters were worn. For the women, the night club girls as well as Olive wore provocative lingerie and Helen Sinclair wore very shiny professional Broadway attire. The rest of the women casted wore everyday clothes of the time period. Such as, simple skirts and blouses others wore flapper style dresses. The costuming played a very important part in this production (class and royalty was easily depicted) as well as the special effects costumes (the hot dogs). The singing ability in this show was spectacular. I was impressed by the lyrics of the songs as well as how the acting fit right in with the vocals. The dancing was phenomenal. I felt that the audience was a little dry and slow to react to the dialogue. For how much energy the show provided, I am unsure as to why the audience did not connect. Despite all the positive aspects of the show, the ending scene of the show was quite abrupt and it felt as though the audience was whisked out of the theater. Also, I do not recommend that you take young children to Bullets Over Broadway due to its display of violence, sexual content, and vulgar language. better perspective on live dramas, which I will remember in the future.
