In the poem, “A Rose for Emily” it describes the life of Emily. Emily’s dad passed away and she was left by herself. After her dad passes away, the townspeople showed up to her house demanding for their taxes. Emily told them she did not have to pay her taxes and demanded that they get out and never come back. Later on, the townspeople found this stench but are afraid to bring this to Emily’s attention. They soon complained to Judge Stevens and the townspeople went over in the middle of the to sprinkle lime on the foundation. Within the year, a guy named Homer Barron comes to renvativation the neighborhood and the townspeople start to see Emily realizes that Homer is not interested in settling down, she goes to by Arsenal. …show more content…
After she purchases this “rat poison” it was the last time Homer was seen and nothing heard again. Emily turns old and gray and dies, a door is then broken down and the items of a wedding were laid out. Homer’s body lay on the bed with a strand of Emilys gray hair on the pillow. In the “Rose for Emily,” the house that Emily lives in is symbolic to her.
The house is symbolic to Emily because she needs to focus on the little things that are required for her to do in her everyday life to keep her house. “On the first of the year they mailed her a tax notice. February came and there was no reply”(Faulkner 1). This is symbolic because she does not want to interact with people and the house is with her. This shows that Emily knew she needed to mail in her taxes but refused too. With her not filling out her taxes with people have to do each year there will be a punishment for not doing so. People could lose there house because they failed to corporate with the state with durning in their taxes. Emily show the lack of feelings she had toward her house with not filling out her taxes. “I have no taxes in Jefferson”(Faulkner 1). This shows when people asked for taxes she confused she had none. She did not want to be apart of the town, so just wanted to stay at home and be left alone. With her not paying her taxes shows she does not care that much for the house she lives in. To live in the house Emily needs to tell the people in the town that she has not started to her taxes yet. Emily needs to make sure she keeps up with the requirements for her house to make sure that the house does not fall apart. “ A neighbor ur, a women complained to the mayor, judge Stevens, eight years old” ( Faulkner2). This is symbolic because if Emily smells bad then her house will smell even worst. When Emily leaves her house and goes into town everyone knows that she is the one that smells bad. If people are complaining to the mayor about her oder, she must smell bad and all she needs to do to fix it is shower. With her smelling bad that shows that her smell is effect by her house. With her not keeping up with herself or the house means they both have the same smell and everyone knows where it must be coming from. This is also symbolic to Emily because the house will smell as bad as her, until she wants to smell good. As she becomes older with the house the smell will gradually get worst to the point where they will be nothing left of the house or Emily. “ Damit, Sir” judge Stevens said will you accuse a lady to her face of smelling bad”(Faulkner2). This is symbolic because her and the house smelled so bad that people were asking to charge her for this odor. The writer is trying to inform the reader of how bad the smell was coming from the house and Emily. Moving on with life the smell will get so bad and will turn into nothing. When someone passes away everything they own goes away with them.
Sometime the things people own or they have when someone passes away goes away with the person that passes away.“ Up to the day of her death at 74 it was still that vigorous iron-gray, like the hair of an active man”( Faulkner4). This is symbolic because at that age she still as that kinda of hair, and connect with the house because the house is the same house but just older. They are both the same thing and they are alike and the house went down with Emily. The life of Emily was symbolic with the house because the way she lived was a way that her house lived. With everything that happens in Emily’s life impacts the house in a scerent way. This is symbolic because Emily’s life and the challenges she faces is a way that the house is impacted. “Fell in the House filled with dust and shadows, wth only doddering Negro man to wait on here”( Faulkner 5). This is symbolic because the writer is trying to emphasize that Emily has a house full of shadows and dust and this is how Emily’s heart is and this was the way she learned to live. Emily and the house are the oldest things in the town. They are things that stands out to the towns people and everyone asks question relating to Emily and her
house. In conclusion, Faulkner gave many examples for the readers to understand how symbolic the house was to Emily. As Emily continues with her life and as she gets older living in her house the story foreshadows her house because everything that happens to her also happens to her house. When Emily passes away so does the house because there is nothing left of either of them and that is why Faulkner makes connections on why it is so symbolic to Emily. In the poem A Rose for Emily by Faulkner he made it clear to the readers that their was symbolism with Emily and the house she lived in her whole life.
