Post-Traumatic Syndrome Disorder is also known as PTSD. It is a serious condition that can develop after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic or terrifying event in which serious physical harm occurred or was threatened. PTSD is a disorder that a person may not know he or she has. The symptoms of Post-Traumatic Syndrome Disorder can be severe at times. Symptoms include: flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, uncontrollable, and avoiding others and events. There are not treatments that can completely cure PTSD, but seeing a therapist and taking medications can help a patient’s mood swings. (Mayoclinic, 1996-2016)

In William Faulkner’s short story (3) the denial starts to set in when the statement “she told them that her father was not dead” is said. When her looks are explained, “She looked bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that pallid hue” (Faulkner 1), you can see that the PTSD is taking over her body. “Feelings of depression, guilt, tension, worry and difficulty sleeping may contribute to he physical ailments” (PsychGuides.com, para 6). Since the day her father died Emily has stayed locked up in her house by herself.
All of the events that have taken place in Miss Emily’s life are terrible and completely capable of causing PTSD. By the way she looks, acts, and talks all show signs of Post-Traumatic Syndrome Disorder.
