A Separate Peace Reflection
During the reading of “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles the relationships and similarities shared between the characters and myself was remarkable. In many ways any high school freshman could relate to this story of friendships and death. The boys at Devon are intricate characters that can be related to in one-way or another. When I was reading I could pinpoint specific relatable themes that freshman could relate to. For example, there are specific classes or course you can be late to in school without discipline; in Phineas and Gene’s case summer classes are very lenient. Also, the characters are very close to a freshman’s age. They are going through the same physical and emotional changes as a freshman. Moreover, this book set through four years of a high school so in a way, this book can give us an idea what to expect in high school. Nevertheless, there are many differences between Devon high school in the 1940s and typical high school but the book …show more content…
For example, when Gene starts to get jealous Finny he try’s to set him back and ends up breaking his leg. This can teach freshman not to take physical action because they are jealous because jealously is common in high school. There are many of these interactions like this in a Separate Peace that freshman-entering high school can learn from. Another very important reason why this book was assigned was the time period of World War II. This book not only gives a flash into what the time period was like but also how the war affected the young boys and girls. A reason this could be targeted towards freshman is to give them insight on what life was like in World War II. From experience, I know students learn about the World Wars in high school so this book gives you a foot in the door of what we are all going to learn. Essentially, this book by John Knowles can be derived as a lesson for anyone entering high

    1) The main character of the book, A Separate Peace, is Gene Forrester. He is in the senior class at Devon. He is widely known as the smart student who is always on time to class and always does his school work. Gene is a good choice as the main character of this book, but if the author would have chosen Finny as the main character, the book would have been different. Finny leaves Devon for an amount of time because he breaks his leg. Therefore, if he was the main character, the book would not have been placed at Devon the whole time, it would have been placed at Finny's house for a short amount of time. The reader would have also been able to see what Finny was thinking when he first broke his leg and when he did it a second time. The two characters are similar, in the fact that, they both would not be where they are today without their friendship. They are also both very competitive with each other. Gene and Finny are different, in the fact that, Gene is shy while Finny is very outgoing. Finny is focused on athletics while Gene is focused on academics.…

It is important to confront reality, no matter how harsh it is. People will always face difficult situations, but avoiding them is often more dangerous than the situation itself. In the story, Gene, the protagonist, and his friends are students at the Devon boarding school; and the troubling issues they face are wars, the external, World War II, and the intimate conflicts that often arise between close friends. He says, “All of them, all except Phineas, constructed at infinite cost to themselves these Maginot Lines against this enemy they though they saw across the frontier, this enemy who never attacked that way – if he ever attacked at all; if he was indeed the enemy” (204). Everyone has enemies, but the enemy might not always be other people most of the time the enemy is within yourself. Gene realizing this at the end of the book shows that he is not a kid anymore and has lost a lot of his innocence. James M. Mellard wrote a literary criticism about A Separate Peace titled “Counterpoints”. Within in his criticism he explains how counterpoints in the novel lead to Gene’s “loss of innocence and growth to maturity” (Mellard 56). One of his points he makes is that Finny’s fall is a significant device of plot and structure. Finny’s falls are what make Gene come to his perception on life. “… into one unified, complete, and well-adjusted personality, who, better than most can come to terms with the duel actions” (Mellard 61-62). Finny’s fall alters Gene’s perspective of reality causing him to have a great sense of maturity. Mellard concludes his argument by saying that the overall message in the novel is Gene, “growing and maturity and accepting his place in the world”…

Friendship is a special bond between two people; a bond that depends on one important element, trust. The book A Separate Peace focuses on the relationship between two adolescent boys in prep school. Phineas and Gene had two completely different personalities. Phineas, athletic and adventurous, had a wild imagination, and never followed tradition. Gene, smart in academics, conservative, and hard working, would have preferred to follow the rules. It hardly seems that the two could become friends, being so different from each other; having little in common, what time could they possibly spend together? When Phineas persuaded Gene into biking to the beach with him, Gene thought of several reasons not to go, still he went with Phineas. Much of…

In times of world conflict, civilians and soldiers alike try to escape the war through whatever means possible. A Separate Peace by John Knowles takes place during World War II in 1943. The main characters all long to maintain their innocence and separate themselves, and their school, from the war. The boys see the school as becoming corrupt by the war and use the Winter Carnival's festivities to create a separate peace. Nevertheless, Knowles's use of war related imagery through the setting, the boys' behavior, and the prizes used in the Carnival suggests that the peace they see is a facade.…

"Older men declare war. But it is youth that must fight and die. And it is youth who must inherit the tribulation, the sorrow, and the triumphs that are the aftermath of war." (Herbert Clark Hoover). This speech, made by Mr. Hoover illustrates the misconception of war that is passed down by generation, filled by over-glorified lies, which enthrall the youth to join the war effort, where they are merely pawns in a global conflict. The misconception of war that the youths ' have parallels their fear of the enemy, caused by the aura of warfare. Although, this enemy often is a figment of their imagination, it makes the youth create boundaries, to such an extent that they start to believe that the boundaries are fortifying themselves, so that no enemy, externally, can harm them, while their internal enemy (themselves), creates internal conflicts, which long-go unresolved. By having these unresolved conflicts, it creates a strain on the relationship with other people (particularly a best friend), making it seem warlike. John Knowles illustrates that the relationship between Gene Forester (hereafter referred to as Gene) and Phineas (no last name given and hereafter as Finny) is a microcosm of the outer world in his novel, A Separate Peace. Gene 's resentment of Finny caused their relationship to become a miniature war because their constant battling results in casualties as does war. Gene 's resentment for Finny causes him to jounce the limb of the tree; consequently, Finny, a young man with proclivity of athletics, falls from the tree and shattered his leg in many places and hence, Finny is the major casualty of their war. The affection that Gene and Finny have for each other is symbolic to that of a soldier and his wounded Ally during combat. In this case, the soldier is Gene and the wounded ally is Finny. Gene 's confusion of life makes him do many things, which alters his seemly utopian…
