Macintyre describes Nicholas Elliott much like he does Kim Philby, a charismatic, charming figure that would make anyone fall in love with him with just his words. Macintyre also goes into great depth about how Philby and Elliott came from successful families and backgrounds. The book also states that the cool thing to do back then was to be a part of a club. This is where he made friends with the C.I.A’s top mole hunter, James Jesus Angleton. This is also ironic because Angleton did not find the most important double agent, his friend Kim Philby. The two would often meet at Harvey’s, their favorite restaurant. They would both share information over drinks. This was a common way for British government officials to gather information. The two were both very competitive. They would often challenge each other to see who could drink more. Angleton thought that everything he was saying was small talk, but it was all fed to Russia by
