Due to the unpleasant past between White Australians, indigenous Australians and Japanese people, there have long been tensions between these racial groups. These were intensified by the fear and threat of invasion during World War II. In the novel, The Divine Wind, Garry Disher presents readers with a confronting account of prejudice and fear during this time. This is evident through Disher’s representation of the harsh treatment of aborigines and Japanese; furthermore, it is illustrated that everyone is capable of possessing prejudicial views through Disher’s variation of characters.…
In A Conquering Spirit, Gregory Waselkov contends that aggressive American colonization of Creek lands in what is now southern Alabama was the main cause for the Fort Mims Massacre and a continuation of the Redstick War; history seems to support this view without vindicating the action of the Redsticks which were mostly composed of Upper Creek Indians. The atrocities at Fort Mims, such as the indiscriminate killing of pregnant women and children, incensed Americans and escalated the war in the region, which later prompted General Andrew Jackson and his troops to become involved in the conflict. Waselkov appears to believe that the events at Fort Mims were unavoidable given the tensions between the Creeks and the Americans. Bad feelings had been fermenting between white settlers and Creek Indians for several decades primarily because of occupation of Creek lands and the insistence from white settlers that the Creeks adopt white traditions.…
In the book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, Anne Fadiman tells us the story of a little girl named Lia Lee, caught between the differences of two cultures. The differences in Lia’s parents’ knowledge, abilities, and understanding of the culture they were surrounded by and the rationalized facts that Western medicine and its culture provide bring us to the borderland of the two. When these two cultures meet Lia’s life is put in danger, not only by epilepsy and septic shock, but also by the conflicts between her parents and doctors. Lia’s life depended on the realities of the two cultures to act together in harmony to bring her health and happiness. The mutual misunderstanding of the two failed to bring help to her wellbeing. This quote by Fadiman, “I have come to believe that her life was not ruined by septic shock or noncompliant parents but by cross-cultural misunderstanding” (262) which shows us that while Lia was harmed by a physical disease, she was also harmed by a cultural disease or that which resulted in the conflicts between the two. Some of the conflicts between the cultures were the language barriers, prejudices of culture, and religious conflicts. The language barrier was a serious conflict that led to the inability of asking simple questions such as “Where do you hurt?” This led to the misdiagnosis many times for Lia. This language barrier also proved harmful to Lia’s wellbeing when she was finally correctly diagnosed and drugs were given. Lia’s parents had no way to be able to be even minutely successful in the administering of these drugs which led to the terrible injustice of Lia being taken away from her parents.…
The journal mainly provides emphasis on the description of the traditions of Wesleyan, Holiness, and Pentecostal beliefs. Knight’s biography set out to focus on a vaster group of Christians that expected a miraculous encounter with God that would impact them personally in an abnormal way and absolutely change the entire mind set about their current culture. The actual book From Aldersgate to Azusa Street shows us the lives of men and women that tried to fix the unjust system and the appointed so called leaders that questioned both race and gender. Particularly the Methodist historians, haven’t ever gave enough concern, so to speak, with spiritual birth or the birth…

During my junior year in high school I visited the oncology area at St. Christopher's hospital for children with the Quilt for Kids a nonprofit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of children who suffer from abuse or life threatening illnesses. Oncology is the study and treatment of tumors such as cancer. The volunteers made quilts for the kids for support and comfort during their recovery. I made two-horse stuffed animals instead of a quilt, I wanted them to hold on to something while they went to a difficult process. I made a chestnut-brown horse color, with hazel eyes, and light-colored hair. The other horse was a dun horse with tannish tint, with brown eyes and dark long hair. This experience had an emotional impact on me it…

In this essay I will review the question of how the Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down exemplifies the techniques of ethnographic research that we have studied in class. Also I will consider the question if there are ways in which Fadiman could have improved her methods to be a better anthropologist. In the essay I will look at the specific methods and techniques that Fadiman utilized. I will discuss where she conducted her research and also cover how she conducted her fieldwork. I suggest Anthropological studies on cultural difference would have a practical application to Lia’s study for the following fact that the Hmong do not completely believe in western medicine.…

Spirit Week (Oct 5-9) kicked off this year with the classic "Pajama Day", the majority of the students dressed in their adorable onesies and pajama pants. Twin day followed after, and the Juniors lead in winning the Spirit cup. But, with Homecoming and Pep Rally Day coming up on the horizon; each class determined to have more spirit and participants than the others for Spirit Week. Freshman, Madison Contestable, told us her class has enough spirit to win the Spirit Cup: "For sure. I know I do, I've done every single day." As Lauren Wiseman, a Junior, said, "I'm wishing the Juniors had more spirit." Entering the third day of Spirit Week, each class put in their all for another classic: Wacky Tacky Day. Bright colors and funky outfits roamed the halls during the entire school day. But to fit the overall theme of Spirit Week along with the Homecoming Dance was…
The purpose of the poem under theme “The Hidden Language of the Soul” is to evoke an emotional response in the reader and to cause him to ponder about dance as a language but to also inform them on the difficulties of speaking that language. The poem shows the definitions of verbal language in dance and how emotional an experience dance can be. It aspires to touch dance teachers, as well as members of the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism, as they can influence the acceptance of dance as a non-verbal language. The context chosen to reach the audience to perform the piece at a poetry exposition so that its message is heard by a great number of people at once. The poem can also be placed on Facebook or Twitter to reach a younger audience and expose more people to it. In addition, the poem can be placed in a magazine for dancers and distributed to dance schools to build awareness amongst an artistic and socially aware audience.…
The citizens of Pala have a different philosophy than the Raja and Rani, the rulers. The Rani, here, expresses that she will be the harbinger the Crusade of the Spirit, where the world is exposed to modern life and people restore a faith in God. This creates conflict because the people have different ideologies, and the Rani does not support her people. Despite Will Farnaby’s intentions to bring oil to the island, he even realizes that there is some innate flaws with her plans. The Rani wants to bring a new era of thought, yet she neglects to think if the people will be happy in this. They are currently very happy and peaceful, so introducing new forms of thought, expressly against the people, is very disrespectful. It also reveals how unaware…
