A Thousand Splendid Suns is very influential because, it taught me sacrifices are made in order to learn and overcome from it. Early in the novel, we get encompassed with the perspective of a girl named Mariam Jo. Everyone in she encountered abandoned her, when she needed them the most. Mariam’s mother, father, and everyone she knew left her. Before Mariam was even born, she carried the burden of an illegitimate child. Her mother, Nana, would always call her a “Haram,” in other words a taboo. She was unwanted and blinded by her father, Jalil, constant lies. Mariam was then thrown into marriage with a middle aged man at 15 years of age by Jalil’s wives. Unfortunately, during this predicament she constantly faced physical abuse. Mariam also had to cope with the burden of a miscarriage, which took things to a complete downfall. She was helpless, and lost the meaning belonging and love. However, even though Mariam was faced with her constant inconceivable situations, she was able to pull through the fire. She met this girl named Laila, who was also dragged into the wildfire. …show more content…
Through Mariam and Laila’s encounter, they were able to find the warmth in the fire as well.
Instead of a fire burning them from the outside, a deep passion for each other's company and well-being was lit inside. This novel taught me amongst the amongst the storm, there is inevitably a calming period. You will be granted will many benefits, but you just have to wait the storm out. No matter the outcome, your worth in this society will always plant a seed for others to take
after.
Although Mariam and Laila befriended each other, they encountered doses of PTSD before meeting. Mariam's mother committed suicide because Mariam was so eager to learn about Jalil’s family and home. Nana warned her beforehand, but Mariam left her “hanging.” After Nana’s death, Mariam blamed herself for her mother’s death. On the other hand, Laila’s father and mother were bombed right in front of her eyes during a coup d'etat in Kabul. Her best friend died, her significant other Tariq was claimed to have passed at one point too. However, both of these strong willed women, pulled through amongst the calamity and horror. Mariam and Laila have seen it all, their burden gives the audience a glimpse of life from another’s perspective. Even if your country is at peace, their are people just like you who are suffering from the clutches of war.
A Thousand Splendid Suns taught the audience various topics relating to sacrifice, abandonment, and PTSD. But the most important thing it taught me and possibly others is that it’s possible to overcome many challenges. Even if the journey is a road filled with spikes, it’s your job to create or bear the burdens. People outside your country are suffering at the minute, you might not realize it. This novel also taught me how to consider life at others point of view and the sacrifices my family made just to feed my sense of well-being. This is a ‘small world’ and people to this day haven’t realized that. A Thousand Splendid Suns opened my eyes to a cruel world, where we wake up to a false ‘dream’ every single day---until we perish.
