Mariam’s selflessness is exhibited most when she chooses to take all of the blame for murdering her husband. Mariam could have run away with Laila, but she chose not to, in an act to keep Laila’s family safe. During this time, Laila learned what it truly meant to be selfless by Mariam’s example. Mariam says to Laila, "For me, it ends here. There's nothing more I want. Everything I'd ever wished for as a little girl you've already given me. You and your children have made me so very happy. It's all right, Laila jo. This is all right. Don't be sad." Mariam displays a strong impression of love and selflessness when she says these words and gives up her life for her family. Though Mariam would not like to die, she loves Laila and her children too much to put them in danger. By this precedent, Laila learns from Mariam and developes her own strength of selflessness.
In conclusion, Mariam and Laila’s relationship was essential for facing their hardships. Both women taught each other strengths that the other was without. This tight bond that they formed was very unique, and both women cherished and treasured it. Life is composed of many frightening challenges and obstacles, and Laila and Mariam’s friendship made those difficulties slightly easier to overcome.
