The best realistic fiction always seems believable and logical with the situation of the story line. This is certainly true in the short read “Navajo Lessons.” In the story Celine and her brother Josh have to stay at their grandmother's house for the summer at a Navajo reservation. While there Josh and Celine are forced to learn the Navajo language, which is the only language her grandmother speaks. Celene dislikes this and doesn't want to learn the language, until one day when she and Josh have to run for help to save her grandmother before it is too late. In the story, the main theme is the importance of being open-minded and trying new things.…

The United States is facing a critical problem with the youth of its own nation. The United States has dropped to 30th in the world in I.Q. scores as of 2005. Some nations ahead of the U.S. include Andorra, Estonia, and Singapore. This drop off has been steady for the last 2 decades, and we continue to drop on the list or reading, math, and chemistry scores. It would be easy for us to blame some of the distractions our western culture has created such as the T.V., computer, teen sex and pregnancy, and the music industry. In “A Tribe Apart” by Patricia Hersch, the author follows the lives of 8 teenagers as they embark on their four years journey of high school. She observes these students in the year of 1992, and invites the reader to a firsthand look into sex, tests, prom, sports, and everything else that makes up the life of an American High School student. It is also important to note that Mrs. Hersch observed mainly Caucasian and middle class students in the town of Reston, Virginia. Many of the problems associated with the students in this book can be amplified by lower class minorities who do not have the resources of the middle class kids.…
It had been such a long and hard journey. The long walks and difficult terrain, the materials and luggage we had to carry seemed to weigh tons and the sweltering of summer and bitterness of winter was almost unbearable. Not to mention how precarious the whole trip was, one wrong step and we were goners, especially by the natives. We ran into some Mandan Indians and they refereed to us as the pretty people, which I mean, who am I to complain? But not all encounters with the natives were good, we had an especially frightening run in with the Teton Sioux Indians. We were just passing through the river and they cornered us! Luckily their chief called them off and we were on our way. We’re coming back home and all so obviously the journey was a…

The ethical value that I believe is best illustrated by the movie is Consequentualism because it states that consequences of an action are the ultimate deciding factor in whether or not an action is ethical. In the movie the belief that the amount that could be learned from the extinct species that were on the island far outweighed the problems of bringing back a species that natural selection had removed.…
In the 1830’s the trails of tears was an act of removal of Native Americans out of their home lands. White Americans who also occupied the same land as Indians resented Native Americans. Most whites saw them as aliens and uncivilized people. Therefore, President Washington tried to solve the “Indian problem’ by making them as much as the whites. They encourage them to convert to Christianity and learn to speak and read English. Five different tribes embraced their customs and became known as the “Five civilized tribes”. These included Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, Creek and Cherokee.…

Calvinism is probably the most controversial topic in the contemporary Southern Baptist Convention. About a year ago, the debate reached a new level of intensity with the publication of “A Statement of the Traditional Southern Baptist Understanding of God’s Plan of Salvation” and the responses it provoked from both Calvinists and non-Calvinists. Resolutions on the “sinner’s prayer” and cooperation at last year’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans were directly related to the Calvinism debate. In recent months, Calvinism has allegedly been at the center of controversy at more than one Baptist college. I am regularly forwarded links to blog posts by both Calvinists and non-Calvinists that seem more interested in winning a debate than forging a consensus. Twitter is often even worse.Southern Baptist Beginnings…
Far before the European settlers came along, Native Americans called North America their home. Specifically, the Cherokee tribe thrived in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Even after European intervention, Cherokee culture still lived on. In the book, The Story of the Cherokee Indians, 9th grade Cherokee students from the Eastern Band describe some of the distinct details of their culture. This publication is just one way that the Cherokee craft has been able to live on. This essay will briefly illustrate the lineage of published books and go in depth on the type of publication that The Story of the Cherokee Indians is.…
The way of life for the Native Americans changed greatly when the settlers arrived but they fought strongly to hold onto their sacred beliefs. No amount of influence or interference from the Europeans could change what the American Indians believed in. The natives fought long and hard to try to preserve their heritage and their lifestyles. While they are still given a small portion of land to live on, the plight of the Native American people has been going on since the settlers first set foot upon this land and continues to this day.…
