The Battle of Britain was an important battle in WWII, but did you know that it was ultimately a test of strength between the German Air Force and Britain’s RAF (Royal Air Force). The German Air Force was known as “Luftwaffe” pronounced [‘lဎftvafə] was commanded by Adolph Hitler. While Britain’s RAF (Royal Air Force) was commanded by England’s Prime minister, Winston Churchill. This battle was a major air campaign fought over southern England in the summer and autumn of 1940 between the British and German forces during the Second World War. Essentially, it was a case of a big bully (Germany) picking on the little guy (England). Germany had just came off a battle with France and thought they could just run over England too, but they found out it wasn’t that easy. The Battle of Britain was ultimately won by Britain, or in other words RAF (Lewis). The RAF had superior aircraft, radar and other technology. The British fighter aircraft were shooting down German bombers faster than German industry could produce them. Britain not only had superior technology, their military had more strategic experience. Britain’s geography also helped them in battling Germany. Britain was an island which helped deter Germany’s army, so Germany had no choice but to battle with it’s Air Force. Consequently, this was a difficult task for Germany since their Air Force (Luftwaffe) had just come off a gruesome battle with France. But because of Hitler’s arrogance he rushed his troops in battle without the proper preparation to overtake Britain, even his military leaders lacked confidence in overcoming Britain. Victory during the Battle of Britain allowed England to stay in the war and live to fight another
