A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings Summary
Human Selfishness and Trivialization of Beauty in
A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings is a magical realist short story written by Gabriel Garca Marquez. It tells the story of how Pelayo and his wife Elisenda, find a filthy, old man while killing crabs during a rainstorm. The man has wings, and is assumed to be an angel, there to take their sick child to heaven. It is a story which discusses how humans simply only find value in those things considered beneficial to us, and simultaneously examines abrasive topics such as callousness and exploitation.

As previously mentioned, a recurring theme in the short story is the idea that humans solely find beauty and value in those things which are beneficial to us, and that this need (for people who are beneficial) is so strong and affects us so intricately that

Instead of being in awe due to his ability to perform any miracles at all, something which is miraculous and would even, in some aspects, make him superior to the other inhabitants there, they once again trivialize the incident, and focus instead on the spider woman.

Despite the fact that the spider woman is not any less peculiar than the angel per se, she serves a purpose to the inhabitants. While the old man is barely conscious in his dirty chicken coop, the spider woman tells a story of morality and discusses human truths which the inhabitants can easily relate to and even pity. She serves a purpose to them, and by doing so, she is beneficial. This, again, is another discernible example of the theme of the fundamental understatement of miracles and beauty. Peculiar things are only interesting and significant if they serve a purpose and can be beneficial to us

In the Anthology the authors wrote about many different complex characters. These characters showed great examples of human nature. In my opinion, three of the best stories in the Anthology that had examples of human nature are How it Feels to be Colored Me, by Zora Hurston, The Necklace, by Guy de Maupassant, and The Rose that Grew from Concrete, by Tupac Shakur. These stories show how humans have different characteristics. These characteristics are determination, intolerance, and the need to have more than what they have.…

Author Gabriel Márquez brings his readers into the world of magical realism when he introduces the story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”. In the beginning of the story an old man with “huge buzzard wings” (400) is discovered by two characters, Elisenda and Pelayo, face down in the mud near their beach home. In the second sentence, Márquez states that “the world had been sad since Tuesday” (399) and the reason behind this sentence is to create the sense of realism from the very beginning of the story. With that being said, it mingles the coexistence of fantasy and reality into one story. The idea that the world is sad and because it’s been raining for three days gives a dark and gloomy setting, however, at the same time, this statement humanizes the world by implying that it has feelings. The world cannot feel sadness in reality, but in the fantasy world it does and the meaning can be both clear and unclear at the same time. The two most popular symbols which appear time and time again is the old mans’ wings which represents power and freedom of movement within the earth, and the spider woman, which is representable of the peoples capricious approach to their own faith.…

As the story progresses Pelayo and Elisenda take care of the old man and nurse him back to health. In the mean while, they use this old man as an attraction. The couple literally put him on display for people to see and charged for it. Hundreds of people flocked to see this very old man preform miracles. This lasted for a while until the story gets sidetracked by a half-spider half-girl. Marquez seems to change the topic completely by adding another supernatural creature to the story. The spider girl just adds another weird twist to the story and…

In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” Gabriel Garcia Marquez uses the literary symbolism of the old man to show that one can never know the full truth of that which is different, because they either do not want to question the truth, or they actively deny it. So between the differing opinion of the people within the narrative and the lack of the old man’s speech, it is never definitely known if he is an angel.…

What the spider girl and the angel/old man both bring to the table to help distinguish the two ways they approach literature. People cannot read many books because of the difficulty of the book. As the people convey the angel/old man and spider as different objects and how both come with confusion as it makes me think of a book. Like the angel/old man is confusing to some, but not most people, yet also misunderstood. As said before, the angel/old man doesn’t come out and say what he feels, and often has to be interpreted and the interpretations make it harder for him to identify with anyone. As for the spider girl, there is no interpretation needed as she comes with a human persona by telling her story and having that communication with the people and not be confused about her story. She is portrayed as an open book. Together, the angel and the spider girl both come to compare as they both approach different views of…

When looking at this picture I see a monster, a large creature out for blood, but as I closely examine the sculpture I see true meaning. Maman by Louise bourgeois shows the strength of a mother, with metaphors of spinning, weaving, nurturing and protecting.Spiders may have held a special meaning for Bourgeois, giving protection, and foresight. As a child bourgeois may have had a pet spider and may have not had her mother around as much she would have liked which resulted in her saw seeing her spider as a mother figure. This sculpture is shows how protective a mother can be, no matter the species. When I look at this sculpture, the book Charlets web comes to mind because Charlet the spider treated Willbur the pig as if he were her own. It didn’t matter that they physically different, they still protected each other as if they were the same.…

The old man with a wing symbolizes our unprecedented encounter in personal life, social, religious and cultural groups. We perceive only what is in our anticipation with or without pondering. In this story, Pelayo and Elisenda did not much care about the old man until after their child fever is gone. They probably believed the old man is the reason, and spare him some care. The old man's uncanny appearance and strange dialect work against his attention.…

Marquez creates a symmetrical structure throughout her diction in the story line by opening with the arrival of an [unusual] presence that further causes a change between the lives of several characters, and ends with a departure that finishes the natural cycle. It begins with the entrance of the old man, the community questioning if indeed he is an angel, and ends with his final departure. Upon discovery, “…it was a [very] old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn’t get up, impeded by his enormous wings” (Marquez 234) that initially started the debate amongst the community. The confusion began as the family wondered what to do with the creature or if he were some sort of angel from the heavens. The physical features looked like a man however; the [obscure] wings led people to believe he was some sort of angel. His [picturesque] presence changed the views of the whole community and serving as a main attraction. One of the old man’s final moments occurs as “Elisenda [let out] a sigh of relief, for herself and for him, when she saw him pass over the last houses, holding himself up in some way with the [risky] flapping of a [senile] vulture” (Marquez 239). It was noted that the old man began to sit and distance himself when the changes…

Evil is inevitable in this world, but it is the explanation of some evil that people often wonder about. The writer of “Caught in the Widow’s Web,” Gordon Grice, focuses the essay on his hunt for black widow spiders. Nevertheless, his purpose has a profound meaning. The black widow represents all of the unexplainable evil in the world. There is no explanation for the widow’s poisonous venom, nor for the malevolent people and occasions in life. Grice’s sinister tone for the duration of his work suggests that there is higher, complex meaning as to why he wrote the piece. Throughout the essay, the black widow metaphorically represents the evil and hardships in the world.…

Is the church as solid and strong as it seems? In “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, Garcia Marquez uses magical realism to challenge religious beliefs; hence, proving religion is not what is seems. To begin with, when the old man with enormous wings lands in Elisenda and Pelayo’s courtyard and after concluding that the man must be someone who survived a shipwreck they call their neighbor to see him. Their neighbor proclaims right away that he must be an angel. Her reaction to the man with wings is purely influenced by faith. She blindly assumes things based on what she has been taught her whole life: "He's an angel," she told them. "He must have been coming for the child, but the poor fellow is so old that the rain knocked him down." (García Marquez 1) This shows how religion influences the interpretation of various events; hence, limiting them to find a deeper or more meaningful significance to any situation.…

It demonstrates the unimportance of a single human life, while at the same time shows the limits of a person’s strength and motivation to exist.
