One way the author made the story stand out was the tone he used. In the first paragraph of the story the author makes it appear as if you were experiencing what was going on. “On the third day of rain they had killed so many crabs inside…”Pg.353. The way the author uses the tone in this story makes it easier to read and comprehend. The old man is also being characterized as a superficial angel. As if he was an animal at a circus, people mistreated the old man by “having fun” just by throwing things at him. As it says in chapter two in page 354 Pelayo and Elisenda describe the old man as if he was a lost sailor. Father Gonzaga also describes the old man as an imposter. He characterizes him as a person who makes people think he’s an angel, whom appears to magically make miracles. Also being treated like an animal, the old man is put in the pen house with the chickens. Knowing the old man is humanely they don’t do anything in response to save him or even treat him humanely right.
