The role that attention plays in our ability to process the environment is the first step in processing the information. “Attention is the ability to strategically choose among and sort out different stimuli in the environment” (Feldman,2013). Attention allows us to focus on something particular in our environment while tuning out things that do not connect to something that affects the perception of the stimuli surrounding us.
Common symptoms of ADHD or better known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may have a low tolerance for frustration. ADAH make children do things out of the ordinary like make loud noises, have difficulty with tasks like following instructions and organizing things. Children cannot sit to watch a television program, interruption of others or excessive talking, do not wait for instructions, always on the go walking or running around and cannot play quietly. There is not a simple test that can be done to diagnose whether a child has ADHD. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can be over-diagnosed because some kids don’t mature as fast as other their age and some have more …show more content…
energy than others. It can also be that the child is being missed diagnosed with ADHD and it could be another disorder, and the real problem has just not been identified.
A list of activities that a parent might can utilize to improve attention set up deadline and reminders for tasks and work assignments. Parents also can use” behavior therapy, parents and teachers are trained in techniques for improving behavior, primarily involving the use of rewards (such as verbal praise) for desired behavior” (Feldman,2013).
Hi, Mache!
I agree with you that ADHD can be over-diagnosed. I went years without putting my daughter on medication with she was in elementary school because she is the opposite of ADHD she is ADD which is Attention Deficit Disorder she is not hyper. She did well in elementary school because her teachers would allow for her to repeat the test and I was an active parent always meeting with the teachers to make sure she stayed on track. By the time she got to six grade, I knew it was time to have her diagnosed because the middle school teachers were not as willing to work with her retaking test and to redo her work. She would come home from school under stress because she did not retain the information that she was given in class. I made the hard decision to place her on medication and her grades in school improved. Great

Hi, Ewa! I also believe that children can be wrongfully diagnosed by teachers. Some kids just need more patience and attention than other because sometimes the environment which the child is growing up in could be some of the problems. I know for years that my daughter was ADD. I did not put her on medication until she went to the six grade because and she just was overwhelmed with changing classes and the amount of work she had to do. It was hard for me to put her on medication, but I did, and her grades improved. Great Post!
