Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) that is characterized by prevalent symptoms that is evident at home, school, and in social situations. The symptoms displayed include, developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattention, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity, also called hyperactivity or hyperactive child syndrome. The cause is unknown, but research suggests that it is related to genetics. (Zelman, 2009) Effects of ADHD are developmental delays, poor school performance, and low self-esteem, impaired relations with family members, friends, and teachers. Children with the inattentive subtype are described as “spacey” and socially withdrawn, and they usually have fewer conduct and behavioral problems than the hyperactive-impulsive subtype. They daydream a lot, do not pay close attention details, forgetful, and have problems understanding the details. Children that have problems sitting still for a long period of time are categorized as the hyperactive subtype. They are very fidgety and tend to run around a lot and disrupt others in their class. They have difficulties engaging in quiet activities often blurting out. It is difficult for them to listen attentively during conversations, they bluntly interrupt others conversations, and they cannot wait for their turn to come. This causes them to miss out on important information that is being relayed to them in school and other settings. This shows their impulsiveness. Co-occurring disorders such as depression, anxiety, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and learning disorders has also been exhibiting by ADHD patients.
