Purpose: To observe how an enzyme affect the speed of chemical reaction. To describe how the concentration of an enzyme affects its ability to work.

Hypothesis: Depending on the concentration of the catalase which the disk is soaked in, it will have a direct correlation on the rate of hydrogen peroxide being broken down into oxygen gas.

Prediction: Since the rate of reaction can be lowered by the addition of catalysis such as an enzyme. Moreover to increase the effectiveness of an enzyme one must add additional amount of enzyme due to saturation. Therefore the 100% will have the greatest effect because is has the highest concentration of the catalase.

Label the 50 ml ‘reaction chamber’
Using forceps, carefully dip one disk into a beaker
Hold in liquid for about three-seconds and then touch the disk to the inside of the beaker to remove excess drops of liquid.
Place the filer paper disk on the bottom of the beaker which contains hydrogen peroxide and release it saying now to your timekeeper.
Record how long it takes for the disk to rise to the surface.

Questions:

The catalysis solution is stored on ice so it will not react.
40%
We remove the extra catlike so that there is no extra solution on the disk and so that the results are not skewed.
It is important to use only one disk because the enzyme would take longer to react through two disk, and it would take more time for it to rise to the top of the solution. Oxygen gas was released by the reaction.
The arrows in this reaction represent that energy is being released, also imply’s that the reaction is

    2. It is essential to use fresh and consistent batches of catalase because when the solution is left for a long period of time, it is affected by external factors such as temperature, which would impact the efficiency of the enzymes. To get the most consistent and accurate results, it is best to use the same catalase kept under the same conditions.…

Enzymes are proteins that are involved in all the chemical processes in living things. As they are made of proteins they are affected by pH and temperature. Enzymes are catalysts; they speed up chemical reactions without being changed themselves. Digestive enzymes speed up the breakdown of large food molecules into smaller ones so that the blood can absorb them. Enzymes turn a large starch molecule into thousands of tiny glucose molecules. Enzymes end in 'ase'. There are thousands of enzymes in our body but each enzyme is only specialised to do one thing, for example carbohydraise enzymes digest carbohydrates, protease enzymes digest protein.…
