Aaron Douglass Judgement Day Analysis
I chose to do my textual- to analysis to the painting “Judgement Day”. What I had noticed from the painting was the colors. They had different shades of blue and an off white. The blue means depression and the white represents the afterlife. Within the picture you’ll see a man with angel wings and also holding instruments in his hands. Then others in the background are dancing. When researching the painting it relates to the Harlem Renaissance era. His painting includes Jazz and African American traditions like music and dancing. Aaron Douglas, the painter, said that the meaning behind the painting is the realities of the black struggles for political and creative freedom.
Aaron Douglas was born May 26, 1899 in Topeka, Kanas. He died February

The whole left side has the image of three black people. The dream life of the black is depicted on the right side of the painting, and they bring a positive and happy feeling and mood. The right side is divided into three layers, starting with the idea of justice with the image of three hands holding three different objects such as a hammer, weighing scale, and a book, and they represent justice for black people as it is in a court. The next layer is a grassy and ripened field with some butterflies flying on it, and last one is a sun rising from the mountains. These layers depict the three stages of success in black life. First, they need to attain justice in order to get into a good position in life or to reach the field of opportunities where they can show their strengths and become successful, which later bring them to the light, the sun, and take out the darkness out of their life. The center of the painting, as mentioned, is a White figure, which represents White…

The “red death” is a symbol of unavoidable death. It can even be compared to the Black Death that killed millions of people during the middle ages, in Europe. Surrounding this “red death,” Poe used objects and color to symbolize the unfortunate outcome in the end. For example, he used the ebony clock to portray time ticking down and reminding the people that like the pendulum swinging in the clock, they can not stop what is to come, but can only wait in fear. Another use of symbolism would be the color use for the rooms; the seven colors symbolize the seven stages in life. First, the color black. This was the seventh room and had contained the ominous, ebony clock. It had been "closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy folds upon a carpet of the same material and hue" (146), and contained "no light of any kind.” This represented the dark and unavoidable death. The other six colored rooms represent the stages of life before death, the growth from a baby to…

All the years of slavery (1776-1865) affected both the whites and the blacks in many different ways. Although the blacks were the main ones that suffered, many of the slave owners suffered from the struggles of owning slaves. The whites were affected mentally while the blacks were affected physically, mentally, and emotionally. The blacks weren’t thought of as human; they were thought of as animals but treated worse. The blacks worked hard but weren’t given enough food or clothing to last them. In chapter 1 “Aunt Hester not only had disobeyed his orders….leaving her neck, shoulders and back, entirely naked.” her master caught her with another man. He beat her and tied her up because he was so furious with her.…

The symbolic message I feel that was given off from this particular piece of art was world peace of some sort. In the art there are many representations of various ethnicities such as the black lady in the upper corner, or the Native Americans in the center of the piece. The research experiment observed and analyzed the differences in microbial diversity between lichen on bare rocks and hairy cap mosses in the annual community. Samples from three different sites were taken from Mount Arabia in Georgia, and were analyzed in lab. The results from the data collected showed that greater microbial diversity was present in hairy cap moss than in lichen, with a greater percentage of growth for each colony. This could be the result of the mutual symbiotic relationship that bacteria share with hairy cap moss, a greater source of nutrients available for bacteria in hairy cap moss in soil than in lichen on bare rock, or due to the temperature differences between the two sites being sampled.…
