Contrary to what you may think, a character's actions shape the story. If the protagonist was quick, cunning and strong while the antagonist was clumsy, wimpy and weak, the outcome would be a boring one-sided battle. If, however, the traits were swapped, then the protagonist would need some extra outside help before winning. These small details, like very convincing red herring, change the outcome. Wounded in the head in battle, he obtained epilepsy, and is afraid about what he could do. A gentle man who is afraid about wounding others, he frequently is scared about many, many things. Selling stockings and counting the coincidences, he attempts to turn himself in before finding out that he was framed. Eventually his destiny of being famous comes true, with his story in the newspaper.
The detective of the story, Hercule Poirot, obtains the mysterious ABC letters. Using the clues from the letter and his wits, he jumps from city to city to search for the mysterious man. After a few murders, the murderer slips up with more clues behind. Manipulating the platform, he checks around for clues and finds one. The red herring unknowingly lead him and his group to the true murderer, solving the ABC Mystery.
These characters, using all of their skills and wits, catches the murderer nevertheless. Over the course of this murder adventure, their actions change the plot of the story. If Poirot was not a good detective, the Clarke could have gotten away. If Cust wasn’t so self-blaming, then maybe he would have caught on faster and realized who was the true murderer.
