LITTLE INTRO
The Civil war occurred from 1861- 1865. Before the war, the south was concerned that since Abraham Lincoln became president they thought he will abolish slavery. Southern states decided to succeed from the union which was unconstitutional and against the law. The start of the war was fought at Fort Sumter where the south invaded this Union fort to stop supplies from getting to it. It was the first confederate win. In the end the war was a Union victory after the
Confederate army surrendered. After Lincoln gets elected a second time, reconstruction begins. Lincoln wanted to be lenient on the south while a group in the senate called Radical Republicans wanted to punish the south. Soon after, Lincoln is assassinated and Andrew
Johnson becomes president. Again, Radical Republicans were not happy with his plan because it was still too lenient on the south. They even tried to impeach Johnson but failed.
A- ANTIETAM
The battle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest single day battles of the war, with no clear winner. The battle started in a cornfield and ended in a road with deep wagon tracks. This was Robert E.
Lee’s first attempt to invade the USA. AKS- 38f
B- BULL RUN
The First Battle of Bull Run was a union invasion on Richmond, VA.
This battle gave confederate general, Thomas Jackson, the nickname “Stonewall Jackson.” Thanks to Stonewall, it was a confederate victory. AKS- 38f
C- CHANCELLORSVILLE
The battle of Chancellorsville was a confederate win but also a loss. Stonewall Jackson was shot and killed by one of his men
(accidently). This marks the start of the confederate decline in the war. AKS- 38f
D- DAVIS, JEFFERSON
Jefferson Davis was the president of the CSA. Due to the CSA’s weak constitution, Davis struggled throughout the war because of his limited power. After the war, Davis was no longer president and was cast aside. Fun Fact: He looked a lot like Lincoln…
Coincidence? I THINK NOT! Just kidding though…
E- EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
Lincoln created the Emancipation Proclamation to hurt the south by taking away their “property.” This forced southerners to work their land because their slaves either ran away or were confiscated. The idea of emancipation also boosted union troops’ moral and gave them something worthy to fight for. AKS- 38g
F- FREEDMAN’S BUREAU
The freedman’s Bureau was made in 1865 for refugees and recently freed ex- slaves. It provided schools, hospitals, and any legal matters that needed attending to. Promoted black higher education. The bureau was soon vetoed by President Johnson.
AKS- 39b
Just white southern people being racist and using propaganda to get their way
G- GETTYSBURG
The Battle of Gettysburg was the single handedly worst/ bloodiest battle of the war. It was also one of the most important for it was marked as the turning point of the war. It was the first major union victory but it came at a terrible loss. This was the South's last offensive move of the war.
A little #transformationtuesday for ya
Wow 140ish years really makes a difference! H- HABEAS CORPUS
President Lincoln stopped
“Habeas Corpus” so that he could arrest anyone of whom he thought did not support the union. This was mainly used on democrats called
“copperheads.” All these guys wanted was no war… They were the hippies of the 1860’s.
And a century later hippies pop up again in the 1960’s.
What an interesting coink-adink.
I- IRONCLADS
Iron clads were used in one of the early battles of the civil war. Ironclads are just big ships made of iron (very poor design if I do say so myself).
This battle was called the
Monitor vs. Merrimas and was basically a tie (because those ships kinda sucked at doing their job)
J- JOHNSON, ANDREW
Andrew Johnson was the vice president for Abraham Lincoln. Once
Lincoln was assassinated, the reconstruction fell on him. Johnson’s plan was for the south to ratify the
13th amendment, state constitution had to abolish slavery, wealthy land owners had to personally ask for forgiveness, and only white males who have been pardoned could vote.
This reconstruction did not sit right with the Radical Republicans and they tried to impeach Johnson but utterly failed in the end. AKS- 39e
K- KU KLUX KLAN
The KKK was formed to restore white supremacy and to scare blacks to not use their newly found rights.
Their costumes are straight up creepy The KKK that comes back during the segregation period did not have the same goals as this KKK.
L- LINCOLN, ABRAHAM
Abraham Lincoln was the president throughout the whole civil war.
He initiated things from habeas corpus to the emancipation proclamation. This guy’s main goal was to preserve the union, but turned it onto emancipation to give the troops a “moral cause.”
After the war he gave the Gettysburg Address stating that he will preserve the union and the second annuagral address

Compromises played a big role in delaying the civil war. It was an attempt to slow the spread of slavery to the states up north and also to the territories in the west. It kept the nation united by trying to give everyone something they wanted, in order to keep them all happy. In 1850 there was an equal amount of the free states and the slave states. The territories and states did not want the government to control whether or not they were a slave state or a free state. They wanted to base the decision off what the majority wanted.…

At first the civil War was about saving the Union, but it became much more when the debate of slavery in the North and South came about. Sectionalism became a problem. Copperheads were Northern Democrats who opposed the Civil War; they wanted peace in the South. Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States. Davis argued against secession, he was not as successful as President Lincoln. In the 1860’s, soldiers of the Union and the Confederate started deserting the army. The North and the South passed a law saying all white men ages 18-45 had to a Military draft called conscription. Even slaves went into the Southern military. Even though the slaves did have the Under Ground Rail Road, the Slaves that stayed behind use this as a way to escape.…

Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address took Socrate’s rhetorical approach in that Lincoln tried to influence the souls of his audience. The burning issue that led to the disruption of the union, however, was the debate over the future of slavery.
