A little white lie is still a lie. The Crucible written by Arthur Miller talks about how puritans live such a strict Christian based life until people believe witches are crawling through the towns of Salem. People start going crazy with hangings as Abigail Williams keeps talking about “seeing” people with the devil. Just to save her own self from being hung. All through the act Abigail lied about everything which caused conflict with everyone in the town. The moment Betty told Abigail about the fact that she drank blood and didn’t tell Parris about it she became worried. “Betty, you never say that again! You will never” (lines 341) shows how Abigail left out an important detail that contributes to the situation with the girls that are being accused of being witchcraft. The rest of the play either she hid things or lied to get her way out of trouble.…
She’s also a skillful liar. She is the leader of her group of girlfriends and is willing to do anything to protect herself. The angelic part of her personality is gone after the first act when it is discovered that she accused Goody Procter of witchcraft. She goes out of her way to get the troubles off of her and on to someone else. Abigail seems to bring the evil to the play. She has the willness to make her self look good and put others down. As Junior expresses his awareness of his new classmate’s perception of him, it becomes clear that those perceptions overshadows Junior’s reality. These boys’ relationship with Junior is simultaneously aggressive and hesitant. They are comfortable verbally abusing him, though they draw a line at physical violence out of their fear of him, or rather what they think he is and what they think he could be. Their perception fuels their apprehension and overrides how they can see with their own eyes that Junior is not threatening or harmful by convincing them that due to the fact that he is Indian he is unpredictable and could become violent. In reality however, both Junior and all who know him are aware of how defenseless and weak he actually is…
Abigail Williams is selfish, manipulative, and a compulsive liar. The entire play wouldn’t exist, if Abby hadn’t have been so jealous and selfish. It was Abby’s fault that the girls were in the woods with Tituba trying to cast a spell on Elizabeth Proctor, because Abby is in love with her husband John. The whole reason the Salem Witch Trials even started was because Abby was in love with a man that wasn’t her’s to have in the first place, and she wanted to do anything possible to get rid of his wife so that she could replace her.…

Even though not all puritans were bad Christians, those who broke the puritan beliefs were. In the Crucible, two main characters name Abigail Williams, and John Proctor broke the three puritan beliefs: Plainness, Grace, and Divine Mission. Plainness follows the 10 commandments for example, “Thou Shall Not Kill, and Thou shall not bear false witness against its neighbor”. Grace represents the cleansing of the soul. For instance if you envy someone, you would have to be cleansed of your hatred towards that fellow person. Lastly, Divine Mission the spread of religion. One of the ways you can represent that is by going to church every Sunday, and sharing religious views with others.…
In Arthur Miller 's novel "The Crucible,” the abuse of power and the use of manipulation is rampant. Manipulation is presented not only through the abuse of power but by lying, and jealousy. This is especially true of Abigail, the teenage niece of Reverend Parris. She started this story by giving herself to a married man. Who happened to be John Procter. In the 16th century, western life was very different from today. In the puritan religion, children were expected to keep their heads down and be thankful for their existence. Abigail Williams gains power by manipulating the group of girls in the church into following her and to convince the court that the things they see are real when actually it is all pretend. While alone with the girls she said, "Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it..." Abigail also lies to the court in order to protect herself from any punishments. Her false statements had led Elizabeth to be sent to jail. Elizabeth was a straight forward honest woman. Not one lie has ever left her mouth. But when she was asked if John committed adultery, she lied. She had known that John has had an affair with Abigail Williams yet she told a lie to protect her husband. Jealousy is also one of the sources for manipulation. Jealousy also played a big role in who was to blame for the deaths in Salem. Since Abigail lusts for John, she wishes…
