The religious issue over abortion is so difficult to resolve because of the varied nature of religion in the United States. Due to freedom of religion, there exist in this one nation an uncountable number of different faiths being followed. While sects of Christianity are by far the majority, about seventy percent of the U.S. population as of 2001, other groups still retain considerable numbers of followers (Farrell). Doctrines of many religions, Christian doctrines being the most often used in debates, clearly classify abortion as immoral, a form of murder, and not allowed. This fact, however, does not mean Christian women never undergo abortions. In fact, studies show that twenty percent of 2002 U.S. abortions were obtained by Catholic women, with forty percent being Protestant women, seven and six tenths being other religions, and twenty percent declaring themselves to be of no religious affiliation. The large number of non-religious women found is thought to possibly be the result of these women being reluctant to claim their actual religious status after having had an abortion
