About Colloboration
The week started with discussion on collaboration and how several big companies collaborate with society/NGOs to bring about change in the lives of people who are marginalized in one way or another. I personally always doubted these kinds of ideas but also thought that if they are reaping benefits and simultaneously doing well to society what is wrong with that. But now I think what could be the basic question to determine whether this is good or not. At first what came to my mind is intention i.e. what the intention behind this type of project is for companies. But the subsequent session raise a doubt about that also. What if the intentions are put in the minds of people by someone/some system? What if intention came in the first places because of the popularity of the concept and respectability these type of project receive in media/society/cases in premier B schools?
We also discussed about the inequality in our society and how it had created a system where people on the bottom of pyramid can never reach on top. However they were kept in the hope that they can do like everyone by again creating examples and placing some social system at place. These type of issues and reasoning is very hard to accept for us reason being we are not able to think that this can also be one of the possibility. This is because our society, friends, parents, teachers, relatives, media etc had taught us some things are meant to be in this way only. We heard a argument in class that I can never imagine a society where everybody is equal. This is the feeling of almost everyone but some can express and some even don’t express because again they think that it is not good to show that they believe in inequality. But why is this feeling so strong is it because it is impossible or is it because we can never think of it or is because we were made to think that or we ourselves are afraid to lose some of our privilege that we are having right now will be in danger ? We have always challenged

James Balwin, affirms that is the notion of epistemic privilege, which develops as a result of unequal power relationships in societies. While power is often concentrated in the center of society, those individuals on the margins often gain the greatest appreciation of the existence and complexity of various forms of inequality. This appreciation grants them with a type of epistemic privilege. “The trouble about diversity, then, just that people differ from another. The trouble is produced by a world organized in ways that encourage people to use difference to include or exclude, reward or punish, credit or discredit, elevate or oppress, value or devalue, leave alone or harass’.…

“Even though I asked to be transferred here for the master’s program, coming here was a shock,” Michael Morton wrote on January 22, 2002, from his cell in the Ramsey I prison unit, south of Houston. He was replying to a letter he had recently received from Mario Garcia, a former co-worker at the Safeway in Austin where he had worked before being sent to prison fifteen years earlier. Besides his parents and his younger sister—who made the five-hundred-mile round-trip from East Texas to visit when they could—Garcia was the only person from Michael’s previous life who had stayed in contact with him. Virtually everyone else believed that he was guilty. Throughout the fall and winter of 1986, his case had been splashed across the front pages of…

Do you know what is really going on in our world? Behind the safety of your closed doors there is social injustice. Our past and present is a world full of unfairness. For example how the “Okies” were treated in The Grapes of Wrath, or how of the rich get richer and go to private boarding schools to get the best education in The Catcher in the Rye. Social Injustice arises when equals are treated unequally and unequals are treated equally…

Many of the problems now and in time have been the product of someone stereotyping someone else for being “different” than they are. It can be based off the pigmentation of one’s skin, the religious differences between people, but more often than not, it is because of the class a person falls into economically. Class is a system that distinguishes people by the amount of money a person makes, or that is what class is supposed to be. We often see the upper-class portrayed as educated, clean, and powerful people as opposed to the lower-class who are seen as dirty, lazy, and powerless individuals. The way the media stereotypes the economic classes makes a class seem like a culture instead of an economic standing. In many cases, us individuals allow those stereotypes to become who we are.…

My values and beliefs for this topic came from living here the United States. Growing up here for almost nine years have made me realize that they are some inequality issues that are still a problem and that are being ignore by the lawmaker for example gay marriage not all fifty states are allowing gay marriage to be legalized once and for all. I decided to take a class during my senior year of high school to learn more about social inequality. I decided to take American studies and Ethnic and minorities class. In my ethnic and minorities class I learned a lot about inequalities issues and what exactly was going on in the United States. In my American studies we discussed inequality events that occurred In American a long time ago. I learned about gay marriage, disability rights, women rights, African American rights the list goes on. Slowly I started to realize how unfair the system was and has been. Ever since I Took those two classes my perspective in inequality issues has grown. The lawmakers are not pushing the system to change. The lawmakers are not doing anything to help fight…

Have you ever been treated unfair, not equal because of your race, gender, status, wealth. Every day in this world people are judged and discriminated against just for these things and sometimes for other simple reasons. So many movements have happened in the United States to try and right the wrong of unequal things against minorities. For example women’s suffrage which was the fight for the right for women to vote, they weren’t allowed to vote just based off the fact that they were woman. Another movement was the civil rights movement which if you think about it was not that long ago, it was long overdue, but the movement was not that long ago. As many know it was the fight for the equal justice and treatment of blacks in this country. Being a minority has a broad wide range it is just not black people , or anyone that is not white there are other groups of minorities such as Hispanics, or being a woman, gays and lesbians, religion groups. While in this course I have learned so much about many different kinds of social problems in societies around the world and in the United States, such as poverty, social inequality, race and cultural discrimination, gender stratification, environmental damage, population growth, and urbanization. I chose my final essay to be on Social Inequality and the Minorities in the United States. For me this subject raises many points of our daily life and brings us to the point of reality in our world. While we think such things as racism and discrimination are minor things in our bust lives or in our changing world, but those things are still very much alive, maybe just not in the for front like they were once before but they still do exist and very much alive in out country. My paper is going to discuss how minorities are treated unfair or unequal in this country, and what I think we can do to better solve this silent growing problem here in the great…

The world always been an unequal place. Today, people are treated for not who they are, but for their religious background, race, gender and financial status. Inequality in the United States of America is present in a highest level. America is a country that reunites all seven continents in itself, moreover, it is possible to find people from various backgrounds here. However, not all of these people are treated equally. It is disappointing to see that how everyone is classified in this country. Indeed, if there is a crime the suspect must be a black male, if there is a terroristic attack or threat then the suspect is most likely to be a Muslim, if there is a robbery the suspect will be an illegal immigrant from Mexico. The root of this problem comes from the past century where people were judged by the color of their skin and this problem…

People think that it is not possible to achieve equality because they are restrictions on the Amendments but these restrictions are on the Constitution to protect people from harming one another. Based on the Constitution, it is possible for individuals in society to achieve equality because the First Amendment, Thirteenth Amendment, Fourteenth Amendment, and Fifteenth Amendment show that people have the ability to have rights and could not to be enslaved also allowing for everyone to have the same privileges and the right to vote.…

When we hear the word “America” we often think of independence, opportunity, and success. Equal opportunity can be defined as every individual granted a fair chance and should be treated the same. The opportunity should overlook religion, race, sex, ethnicity, etc. For the last couple of weeks, we’ve been studying the nature of inequality and how it’s had a negative impact on society. From the outside looking in, it seems as if America is the land of equal opportunity, however, that is not accurate. The United States is not the land of equal opportunity. People of different races have to fight daily for fair opportunities. Inequality affects the ability of people who wants to improve the standards of their lives and contribution to society.…

Turn the page to the next chapter of our lives and we’re still searching for equality. Look at the greater picture and see that the whole world is trying to find the same thing. What we define equality as is being equal in our status, rights, and opportunities. When jealousy and envy come into play that changes up the whole game. No longer are we fighting to say we’re good enough for the job, but fighting because the person before us was better for the job.…

Our society has existed by giving and receiving different treatments to others based on the constructed binary groups you are in. Capitalism is our main political and economic system, we constantly engage ourselves with this system whether we notice it or not. Capitalism throughout the years has constructed these binary groups. It’s a system that created classism and heterosexism, it’s a system that could not exist without racism and unfortunately, it’s a system that created sexism. These are all systems of oppressions for the “other” groups such as the poor, the gays, the blacks and the…

According to Adam Ferguson and John Miller, inequality is necessary because it is a great thing. These two believe that with inequality, private property will emerge and when it does people will be creating assets for themselves. When the people are able to create assets, they have a motive to work harder to earn what they deserve. Being more efficient on a daily basis can help a person become more active and helps them accomplishes more. A person can save the resources that they have and convert it into assets of their own, thus creating their own wealth. Ferguson and Millar says that because of personal incentives, a person will not stop working after they have completed their job and received the needed amount. Instead, they will continue on to work even more to gain more in order move up the ladder in society. As social progress, it aids in the development of civilization which is the ultimate goal. I believe that inequality is necessary, because of how unfair things are, if a person is willing to work harder than another, they should have more assets for themselves.…
