Today, I’d like to talk about the human genome. What is the genome? According to scientists, all of our characteristics are determined by our genes. And the genome is a complete set of genes. So I think it is useful to know something more about the genome.
Genetic science has developed rapidly in recent decades. The most important result is the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. All the secrets of life are hidden in them.
Let’s have a look at this picture.
Nowadays, many people are familiar with it. It is a sketch of the DNA's helical structure. Its basic components are quite simple. There are only four types of bases: guanine, thymine, cytosine and adenine. The mysterious complexity of the genetic code, all is composed of these four types of bases. These bases form four types of base pairs. They are Thymine and Adenine, Guanine and Cytosine, Cytosine and Guanine, Adenine and Thymine.
In the human genome, there are more than 3 billion base pairs. They form about 30,000 genes. If we compare the genome to a book, then the genes are the chapters, and the base pairs are the letters. Three letters compose a word, and each chapter has an average of about 10 thousand words.
This book is just like a blueprint of our body construction. It designs all the characteristics of each person, such as one’s height, weight, hair color, blood type and etc. For example, why am I so tall? Because my genes told my body, don’t stop growing before you reach 190 cm! Most of you may have noticed that my hands are always shaking. Why? Because there is something wrong with my genes.
The genome designs not only our physical traits, but also our mental characteristics. Our intellect, emotion, compassion, jealousy, memory, sense of justice, and even personality tendencies, are all from the design of our genome.
The genome provides the range of possibilities of all aspects of our life, but which possibilities will become realities, is
