The thirty-eight years old main character, Will Freeman lives in London with a very comfortable and lonely lifestyle. Will doesn’t have to work, because his father was a successful singer and became famous when he wrote a song called “Santa’s Super Sleigh”. Instead of working Will spends most of his time to watch television, shopping, drinking, smoking cigarettes and driving around with his expensive Audi TT. Will is an irresponsibility person and does not want to be stepfather for his friends Christine and John, and cannot handle relationships with women’s. Will does not need anybody to survive. He has got lots of women’s, but he does not love any of them. He has no family and no friends. Will Freeman is a very immature man, he is very fashion orientated and he loves to seduce women. He is like a teenager trapped in a grown man’s body.

One day Suzie takes Will to a group park. A picnic, where he meets Marcus, the twelve years old boy, son of Suzie’s friend Fiona. Afterward a fantastic picnic, Will and Suzie took home to Marcus. They found Fiona in the living room which tried to suicide with, overdosed on pills. Marcus starts to be uncomfortable with staying at home. He start to follows Will around, and discovers that Will is childless. Will begins to realize that he is important in Marcus’s life and trying to helping him out of problems at home. Will help Marcus to have a modern style, by buy him new shoes to pimp his style - It did not help, because the bullies stole them from Marcus later at the same day. Marcus becomes friends with a girl named Ellie, in the school. Ellie is a famous girl in the school because the kids are scared of her. Marcus is one of the two main characters. Marcus lives in London with his mother, Fiona. She made him become a vegetarian and she always buys him ugly clothes, like her own “hippie” clothes style. Marcus are the quiet one in school, who does not talk a lot, probably because he has no friends, and most of the students bullying him.

Will became a very important person in Marcus life, because he takes over the male role that Marcus never gone through because his father left him, and his mother many years ago. Fiona only has Marcus to love, take care of, and it goes beyond Marcus weekdays. She needs to see it from Marcus’s angle. She finds it difficult to raise Marcus as a normal child because she did not have much money as other parents. It is therefore important for parents to see it for their children’s angles. For me is it so important for parents to raise their children in a way that both children and parents can feel safe with. Many parents want their children to walking in the same footsteps as them. The parents will defiantly get disappointed if their children does not walk the same footsteps, or become something big.

The story takes place in London, in our time. The story starts in medias res with Marcus being worried, afraid even, of the next day. One of the themes comes into play here as Marcus is stressed because he is being bullied at school there is a mix between poverty and richness, Will is very rich and Marcus and Fiona are pretty poor. The composition is built up by one chapter with Marcus and then one chapter with Will, it is built that way until they meet each other in the story. The language in the novel is very easy and understandable, the writer makes it funny to read and I enjoyed reading the book. He made a lot of chapters and because of the many, short chapters; it was very easy and simple to read.

The theme of the book is divorces, and how children are affected of it. In the story Will is a kind of a father to Marcus, and he helps him a lot, because Will feels bad for Marcus because he is lonely. Other themes could be “find out who you are” and loneliness.
The message of the book is that living in your own world is a bad thing. You need family, friends and people you can trust, especially when you are in a bad period in your life. If you don’t have these persons in your life you can’t live a normal life. You will become lonely, and many things can quick turn out to be really bad.
