We all need to feel valuable. We also need friends to support us through hard times. Everybody will do the necessary to survive, which you can see in this text. In the text “About a Boy, a Man and a Duck” we get to see a man who will do whatever it takes to survive.
The story is set in Great Britain in the Midlands. The Midlands is an area in the central England. The Midlands was a very important location for the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. Because of that, there was a lot of estate in the cities. The boy from the story also lives in one of estate. However, most of the story takes place in the park, where Henry the duck lives.
The short story is written by Philip Hughes. He wrote it in the year 2004. The story is about a 7-year old boy called James. He has had a chaotic childhood and he is different from his contemporaries. His best friend is the duck, Henry the Duck and vice versa as well. James visits the duck, Henry, every day and he often brings along the remnant of his lunch because he enjoys to feed the ducks. At the park an elderly man named Simon always carries a bag of Jelly Babies. Simon is untidy and hungry and he asks James if he wants some of the gumdrop. Henry the Duck see the old man as and unreliable person and he doesn’t think Simon has a clear conscience. When James discovers that the packet of wine gum is empty the fetid man invites him home where there are more sweets and James rises to the bait. On the way to Simon’s house James throws small pieces of bread and corned beef, which ensures that Henry the Duck follows. When the man, the boy and the duck attend to the house the duck
