Abraham Colles Fracture

The Colles fracture was discovered in 1814 by Abraham Colles. Abraham Colles was from Ireland. In 1799, Abraham Colles was elected into the Royal College of Surgeons. This is when things really began to change for Colles. In 1802, he became the president of the college. While Colles was in Dublin, he married Sophia cope, and they had eleven children together, but only nine of them made it to adulthood. His oldest son greatly admired his father and went down the same road as him and became a doctor as well. Colles fracture is a fracture of the radius above the wrist, with displacement of the hand backwards and outward. Though this fracture can happen to anybody of any age, it is most common in older woman. Colles fracture causes many problems, including nerve damage and shoulder and hand immobility.
Abraham Colles first showed the world his expertise and discovery of the Colles fracture in 1811 when he wrote a paper called “On the Fracture of the Carpal Extremity of the Radius.” After Colles wrote this paper his work became known all over the world. He was greatly admired by most doctors and professors who taught classes regarding him in any manner. Colles was so greatly admired that when he died, the day of his funeral, every college medical student in Ireland was let out of school in his honor. There is not much known about Abraham Colles or the Colles fracture due to the time period. But, many authors and philosophers have written books and articles based on what little we do know because of the fact that Abraham Colles made such an important discovery and it was so ahead of his time. I believe what Abraham Colles discovered over two centuries ago was amazing and has set a basis for all that we know about fractures in general. Doctors today have used his paper and helped to develop ways of treatment for a fracture that can have lifelong effects if bad
