Abraham Lincoln Being the President of the United States is not an easy job. Not to mention there is always a chance that the whole country could end up hating you. Most likely there are decisions you will make that people aren't going to agree with. Some ideas you have might not always work out the way you want, and people might see them differently than you. To be president, you must be a strong and caring person. Who knows the danger of leading the country, especially back when there wasn't all the secret service or protective transportation. A few of the first presidents risked their lives to do what they did for our country, and that is a reason why we should respect what they do or did for us. Even if we don’t agree with the decisions or ideas they have. Abraham Lincoln's decisions during his presidency, and the way they affected the people of America made an impact in developing the Nation. Abraham was born in February 1809. His family was extremely poor. He had two siblings, and older sister Sarah, and a younger brother, who died during Infancy. When Abraham was nine, he watched his mother, Nancy, died of Milk Sickness. It is caused by drinking milk from a cow that had eaten a poisonous weed called White Snakeroot. Shortly after Nancy died, his father, Thomas, went to Springfield. He came weeks later, with his new wife,Sarah Bush Johnston and stepchildren. Lincoln quickly became very close to his new stepmother, and she help educate him more. Lincoln never lived in areas that had slaves, but while he was traveling with his family, he saw many slaves being treated badly. When he was eighteen, he went to New Orleans, where he saw slaves being auctioned off like cattle in the streets. He never quite understood why black people got so mistreated then everyone else. Lincoln ran for president in 1860. He was running against John Breakridge, Stephen Douglas, and John Bell. Lincoln won 1,866,452 out of 4,685,508 votes, but only won
