It was not until they met again later that they got married to each other on November 4th, 1842. Abraham and Mary had four children: Edward, Robert Todd, William Wallace, and Thomas. In 1844 Lincoln starts his own law practice after moving his family to Springfield, Illinois. Between 1846 and 1849 Lincoln is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives but then leaves politics to practice law again. When he comes back to politics he is elected to the Illinois legislature but turns this down in hopes of becoming a U.S. Senator. In 1859, Lincoln writes a short autobiography after losing the U.S. Senate seat to Douglas. On April 14th, 1865 Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play with his wife Mary. He died the next morning at 7:22 am, on April 15th, 1865. It was not until after his death on January 31st, 1865 that the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution passed by Congress abolishing slavery and implementing the biggest change in our nation.
