Thesis: Abraham Lincoln really is a man that we know so little about how he came to be the president.
In the year of 1809 on February 12th, a baby boy was born to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. This boy was Abraham Lincoln after his grandfather who passed away. He was born in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky as where his siblings Sarah and Thomas (who died as an infant). “When first my father settled here it was than the frontier line, The Panther’s screams filled the night with fear and the bears prayed on the swine” (Pettinger, video, Abraham). His grandfather brought his family here from Virginia in 1780’s. His grandfather passed away when he was murdered by Indians while tending his crops. At the age of eight Lincoln’s
mother Nancy Hankins Lincoln passed away from milk sickness. His father soon remarried Sarah Bush Johnson to help him raise his kids adding her own three kids to raise. Sarah and Lincoln got along really well. “He was the best boy I ever saw, He never told me a lie in his life and never dodged responsibility” (Pettinger, video, Sarah Bush). She encouraged Abraham on his thirst for learning. He taught himself how to write with a turkey pen and blackberry ink at the age of seven. He had less than one year of education but he continue to study and learn more. In the 1830 of March, 23 year old Abraham Lincoln set out on his own when his family moved to Coles County, Illinois.
Sarah and Abraham grew up in an endless drudge of hard labor. During the time Abe’s mother passed away, his father left him and Sally (Sarah) alone for half a year while he went in search for a new bride in Kentucky. This helped Lincoln learn to be independent and to work hard because his and Sally’s life depended on it. On the farm Abe split rails for fences, and kept a store in New Salem, Illinois. 1820 Abrahams Sister Sarah dies when giving birth. He soon joined the Black Hawk War and became a captain for eight years. With the desire to learn, he gained knowledge from everything he did, most of it was self-taught. Of 1830 March, 23-year-old Abraham Lincoln set out on his own. He was a very tall man of 6” 4’. People would describe him as lanky and thin but strong. “After being the Black Hawk War, Lincoln started his political career and campaign for the seat of Illinois State Legislature,” (Saving America’s Civil). The campaigning for the Seat of Illinois State Legislature was one of many election Abe would be running for. Abraham Lincoln Lost his first election for Seat of Illinois. 1834 Lincoln ran again for a General Assembly and won. He served 16 years there. During that time he went to practice more on law. 1842 came around and Abraham Lincoln soon married Mary Todd, who was at the age of 23. In 1846 Lincoln served in The U.S. House of Representatives for 4 years. He then went back to continue practicing law. He continued on with law and campaigning for different elections. He had a few failures but some successes in the political world. His great success though was winning the election in 1860 for president. During his elections throughout his life. What caught his audiences was not only his debating skills and what he represented but his speeches he written.
