ABSENTEEISM: ITS EFFECT ON THE SCHOLASTIC PERFORMANCE OF THE DEGMNHS GRADE 7 TO FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS SY 2012-2013
(Note: improve the title) Absenteeism among students is a serious problem when one student get accustomed doing it, he neglects his studies at the same time he wastes time intended for the school hours.
Also absenteeism leads a student to drop out from school creating problems for both the teacher and parents. The students may not yet realize the consequences of dropping out from school at an early age but when he gets older, he will be sorry and repent for having stopped schooling. I. Situation As class advisers , it is their duty to check the daily attendance of their students. Basing upon the attendance notebook, many of the grade 7 to fourth year students were always absent especially in the afternoon, if not absent, they were late. Most of these students finally dropped out of school. During the first grading period, it was noticed that some of the grade 7 to fourth year students have low performance in the different subject areas. To find out the possible causes of this problem, the researcher interviewed students, parents, class advisers and subject teachers. They asked the students to answer a questioner. II. Problem (note : main prob - narrative form, sub- prob –specific) Why is it that many grade 7 to fourth year students are always absent? Possible Causes 1. Poverty 2. Lack of interest in their studies 3. Poor scholastic records 4. Family problem 5. Help their parents in their household chores 6. Illness 7. Influence of their peers 8. Laziness 9. Unpleasant relationship with their teachers 10. Harassment made by their schoolmate 11. Gambling 12. Membership to fraternities 13. Drunkenness 14. Computer addiction
III. Generation of alternative solution From the preliminary data gathered, the following measures have to be done to help the grade 7 to fourth year students minimize absenteeism. 1. Ask the students concerned to answer the questionnaire.
2. confer with parents regarding the attendance of their children
3. confer with grade 7 to fourth year advisers and subject teachers
4. monitor their attendance
5. Conduct a home visit
6. conduct seminars on responsible parenting per year level
7. guidance and counseling by the guidance counselor
8. strengthen the open high school IV. Plan of Action a. Objectives (paragraph form)
1. To reduce the number of absenteeism per year level of the school year
2. To improve the academic performance of grade 7 to fourth year students who are habitual absentees(incurring 15 days of absences in the lower sections during the first grading period) b. Time frame
