Block Length: July 13-27, 2015

Block Description:
This block focuses on nursing theories and their relevance to professional practice. Students are introduced to practice models in various health care environments. Future and current issues in nursing practice will be explored.

Topical Outline:
1. Conceptual and Philosophical Bases of Nursing Science
2. Nursing Theories and Models
3. Health Care Delivery Systems
4. Health Care Reform, Regulatory Environments and Political Activism
5. Educational Patterns
6. Social Justice
7 Informatics and Patient Care Technology Issues
8. Inter-professional Communication and Collaboration
9. Quality Improvement

Block Requirements:
The block requirements listed below include, but are not limited to:
1. Nursing Theorist Group Presentation (Formative/Summative; 90%)
2. Personal Philosophy of Nursing Paper (Summative; 90%)
3. Assigned readings
4. Initial postings must be substantial with references. Response posting - at least 2 substantial responses to the posting of peers per discussion

    Nursing has in the last century made a lot of progress thus it has become recognized as a profession as well as an academic discipline. One of these accomplishments was the development, articulation, and testing of various nursing theories. It has been made more meaningful and significant by the theory based practice which has shifted the focus of nursing from vocational to an organized profession. With the development of these theories, nursing has emerged as an independent practice still working closely with the medical profession but no longer dependent upon it. There has been a realization of a knowledge base which has assisted in guiding professional nursing practice. Not only does the theory guide the nursing practice, but research and education as well, resulting in a continually evolving body of knowledge. Most of the theoretical works done by nurses have the intention of making nursing a recognized profession; profession in the sense that nurses should professionally deliver care to their patients. As nurses, we may choose to use one particular theory in our practice but more frequently we use a combination of several different theorists in our practice.…

    The credibility of a profession is based upon its ability to create and apply theory. Nursing as a whole has not been at the forefront of theoretical research being much more practical or hands-on in nature. Unless nurses increase the value placed on research and the body of knowledge that establishes the legitimacy of their practice then nursing will remain in a subordinate position in the medical environment. Theorists anticipated that by conceptualizing models of nursing, practitioners would be able to become more autonomous in their clinical settings while increasing the visibility and authority of nursing as a discipline. It would therefore be anticipated that nurses being able to comprehend and use theory will continue to grow with more master degree nurses and with the development of advanced practice nurses. Theoretical development is imperative as nursing progresses into care management, prescribing rights and specialist arenas traditionally held solely by physicians.
