This claim is both substantiated and refuted in the evidence she uses in attempt to back up this claim. As evidence, Maddison uses two accounts from Aboriginal activists. Firstly, Megan Davis, an aboriginal activist and human rights backs up Maddison’s claim as she believes it is the fault of a poor process which has seen a campaign being run before the proposed reform is clear.…
How would you feel if, as a young child, you were taken from your home and driven to an unfamiliar school many kilometers away? What would it be like to live in a strange dorm where you cannot speak your language or follow your religion? Why would these peculiar people drag you here and abuse you? 150,000 Indigenous people have experienced that torture and shame, which has then continued into many other issues for many of those people; such as depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, lower socioeconomic status on average, and suicide. Residential schools powerfully damaged Aboriginal people in a way we cannot ignore.…
Indigenous Australians suffer disparity within Australian society, ranging from systemic abuse to institutionalised racism, this may or may not be a direct result of the effects of colonisation and subsequent fracturing of Aboriginal society. Furthermore Australia’s first people endure a disadvantaged sociocultural existence, low literacy levels, higher infant mortality rates and low life expectancy “ For example, in 2004-05, the incidence of kidney disease for Indigenous people was 10 times higher, and diabetes three times higher, than for other Australians “ (Banks 2007). Historic and contemporary legislative control practices such as forced removal of Aboriginal children and intervention has further compounded the issues of distrust and…
In the 19th century, the Canadian government came up with an idea to start assimilating Aboriginal peoples into the dominant culture. This meant taking 150,000 children away from their homes and communities and placing them into residential schools. The assumption of Aboriginal peoples culture being peculiar, was greatly believed by the government and many people. The cruel saying “beat the Indian out of them” unfortunately became true, because that is exactly what took place in residential schools. Being exposed to many awful ways of abuse, including mental, emotional, and physical, caused the men and women who attended residential schools to be struggling further on in their lives, specifically regarding cultural practises, and parenting.…
Sitting in the lecture theatre and taking in all the information that was put forward, really opened my mind up to a lot of the horrific issues surrounding the Indigenous people of Australia. When first being exposed to the Stolen Generation, I didn’t know how to feel toward innocent children being taken away from their homes. This was done by social workers and police officers that would invade the homes of the Indigenous people for the removal of their children (Gerrett 2013). It was concluded in 1989 the national Indigenous survey on health found almost half (47%) of Aboriginal children had been forcibly removed from both their parents (Gerrett 2013). This left me in distress, that something like this could happen to innocent children and their families. When saying this, I’m not implying that there are no children in the Indigenous community that weren’t mistreated, but this too happens in other racial communities. It is seen that incidence of sexual abuse of minors is far more worrying in other communities other than the…

One of the most important philosophical underpinnings in the area of child protection is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Australia’s child protection system is not unified but the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) endorsed the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children. Protecting children is not just the responsibility of statutory Child protection Systems but also of parents, communities, governments and business. The national framework for protecting Australia’s children recognises the importance in partnership between Australian, State and Territory governments and non-government organisations to protect our children. The framework focuses on the idea of placing children’s interests firmly at the centre of everything we do and also promote the safety and well-being of all children. Keeping this in mind the paper intends to critically analyse and compare the practices of two adult service sectors, one being the mental health sector and second being the multicultural/refugee sector. The paper will then go on to make suggestions taken from empirical literature on how these sectors can better conceptualise and apply the notion that protecting children is everybody’s responsibility.…
