Abuse Of Power In Animal Farm By George Orwell
Many themes arise when talking about George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, there’s of course the historical significance, which depicts a sort of allegory for the russian revolution, along with the discussion of social hierarchy. A few other themes are discussed as well, but a very prevalent one is the idea of “power corrupts those who possess it.” with this theme though, a question is asked: does it? We of course are shown the deeds of Napoleon and how his actions with new found power turn for the worst, but there are also other details in this book that may prove that power doesn’t corrupt; but that the corrupt search for power. Who has power? The people (or animals in this case) who want it. Napoleon is obviously shown to want power too. Even from the beginning chapter, it states how he made himself very visible in …show more content…
Once Napoleon is in a sustainable place of power he lashes out in extreme measures. Executions are made, animals are oppressed, and one by one the commandments are changed in the pigs’ favor. It stars bad, and gets worse. What’s funny about this book, is at first Napoleon doesn’t seem to be a very significant character. You don’t really know who the book is going to be about, but it sure doesn’t look like it will center around the quiet but entitled pig Napoleon. It doesn’t play him off to be the villain, he’s seen in the background for a bit until the revolution, when he jumps on the opportunity to lead the other animals. What should also be noted is he didn’t play the most significant role in the rebellion itself, it’s just that right after it he seemed to think the animals needed leading, even after being taught by Old Major that animals should rule themselves, he is set on directing them at every step. And with every step of the way he uses squeaker to convince the others that really, he is the most unfortunate to have to lead the others even though he sneakily reaps the benefits of leader from the

As, for Napoleon, who doesn’t support the building of the windmill only because he believes the increase of food production is much more important. From the text that contributes his disagreement of the windmill, ‘’...then suddenly he lifted his leg, urinated over the plans, and walked out without uttering a word.’’ (50) From this quotation, it shows the type of personality that Napoleon has, the personality of a dictator because without a dictator's approval, nothing senses to them that catches their attention and only see it at as a waste of time that can be used for something else. On animal farm, there are many different kinds of representatives for Animalism in this book, and some may be with the acts of sycophants, socialism, or even persuasive acts to convince the animals on the farm, and running a farm was much more complicated on how the animals would think it would be. Orwell's 'Animal Farm' is an allegory because it represents Stalin's rise to power in Russia. His dictatorship to the people of Russia is how Napoleon treated the animals on the farm. Napoleon the pig represents Joseph Stalin, the dictating leader of the Soviet Union. Napoleon tricked the other animals into believing he was the only one that wanted the best for them. He slowly brought the farm from a more equal state to a state where he was considered and treated as a king. He also murdered any of the animals who opposed him or stood in his way, without trial. Stalin did the same by consolidating power and expanding the limits of his role. He eliminated anyone who tried to oppose him. He organized a massive purge where "enemies" were imprisoned,…

Certainly the ramifications of oppression and absolute authority are outrage and this is conveyed throughout Animal Farm. Old Major tries to convince them that the reason behind their servitude and despair is Man, because Major believes that "Man is the only real enemy [they] have" (Orwell 7). Through expressing his anger, Major criticizes the fact that Man does not lay eggs or give milk, "yet he is the lord of all animals" (Orwell 8). It is clear-cut that the animals are affected by Major's speech which urges them to obtain their freedom. Major's point of view is that "all men are enemies. All animals are comrades" (Orwell 10). From here, the reader can deduce that Old Major represents V. I. Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevic Party that seized…

At the beginning, Napoleon quietly raises the dogs up and later makes them completely, absolutely loyal to him. One time when Napoleon had called for an assembly, some animals such as sheep had said an “confession” and as punishment he uses the dogs to execute them. Doing so, Napoleon productively scares the other animals. The animals cannot say anything against Napoleon or face his wrath. “..they had come to a time when no one dared to speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes,” (Orwell 95). This shows that Napoleon maintains power over the animals well because it shows even though the animals want to talk back, “no one dared to speak his mind” since they are so scared. So no matter how much the animals want to go against what Napoleon says, because of the fear and the dogs installed in their minds, they will not. Napoleon shows great success in controlling the animals on the farm by using fear and…

He would do anything to be the one to take power over others. To gain power, he makes other animals believe that the right things are in the wrong. Hitler, in the revolution, made everyone believe the iron race was better, which is compared to Napoleon wiggling the belief that pig blood was better into the other animals’ brains. This action is portrays how Orwell could not accept how many people could be so gullible: “Comrade!...a most terrible thing has been discovered. Snowball has sold himself to Frederick of Pinchfield Farm, who is now plotting to attack us and take our farm away from us!” (Orwell 79). It goes to show how people tend to believe whatever they are told. For example, Hitler would said to people one simple good thing about Germany followed by many negative lies to keep himself in power. George Orwell disagrees with how oblivious people were being even when Hitler would shout out the most out of this world statements. Adolf Hitler had taken advantage of many innocent people in this world. He always told them things to make the bad seem okay, when it was never okay. Other than those reasons, people often did not pay good attention to Hitler’s speeches because they were content thinking they finally had a leader to change their future on good terms. Squealer, in Animal Farm, convinces the animals that boxer was sent to be helped in an animal home by lying, and taking the animal’s lack in knowledge to his advantage: “I was at his bedside at the very last. And at the end, almost too weak to speak, he whispered in my ear that his soul sorrow was the have passed on before the windmill was finished ‘Forward, Comrades!” (Orwell 115). This pig was able to get the farm to believe that Boxer was being helped with the use of propaganda, when really he was being hurt. Squealer was good at making things up. His use propaganda to mess with the animals in the novel portrays…

In fact, he is willing to force harsh rations among the animals and make them work extremely hard because he wants the farm to be successful even if it costs the lives of others. Napoleon was seen as the strongest example of Corruption in the book; his use of power was for his own purpose, using the threat of force and coercion to compel the other animals to do his bidding and commands. He uses propaganda to confuse and brainwash some animals in thinking what he is doing is for the greater good of the animals and their home. The use of the Napoleon’s personal dogs was to threaten any animal that opposes his command or protests’. Coercion was also used by Napoleon to fool the unintelligent animals that are easily being misleaded. As Napoleon’s power is unrestricted, he goes further and further with his power abusing it as far as alternating the entire commandment’s all animals lived by. It shows that the attraction for power had already seeped into Napoleons…

George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm,’ is an allegoric novel set on an English farm, telling the story of the animal’s difficulty in overthrowing Mr Jones and running the farm. However, the storyline shares many parallels with the Russian Revolution from 1915-1945. One of the many similarities between the two is the way the leader preserved his power. The character Napoleon, a young pig, can be compared to Joseph Stalin, as they both created and sustained their power using similar methods. Napoleon did this by taking advantage of the animal’s poor memory and supplying them with incorrect information and propaganda. He also created his power by blaming all of the farm’s misfortunes on Snowball, who can be compared to the intellect, Leon Trotsky, as he was a common enemy and scapegoat. The final method Napoleon used to keep and generate his power is through the use of emotive persuasion, more specifically fear.…

In George Orwell's Animal Farm, "power corrupts" is the central focus, because human nature is filled with too much avarice to allow for complete equality. He writes Animal Farm to prove to the world isn't practicing true Communism; this is contrary to what Russia is saying. Orwell Passionately hates political lying and inequality, and Russia is guilty of both acts. The leaders say it is true Communism, but they're lying because there are people in charge (inequality). Orwell must be subtle in accusing Russia leaders though, because his punishment could involve an axe whistling towards hi neck for making the government look bad, so he uses animals instead of people in his novel. To ensure everyone is able to read Animal Farm, he writes with simple language so it can be translated to other languages. With these precautions and…
