Academic Honesty
The first article I came across when performing my search was Online Academic Integrity by David Mastin, Jennifer Peszka, and Deborah Lilly. It was peer reviewed and published in Teaching of Psychology, July-September 2009, volume 36 issue 3. Using EBSCOhost I searched for online academic integrity. In this article research and surveys were conducted among students regarding academic integrity and dishonesty. The issue in this was that most students thought it would be easier to cheat in their online courses however very few followed through with cheating. It's also a theory that an honor code may reduce dishonesty.
The second article I found while searching was Academic Integrity and Distance Learning by Mark Lanier. It was peer reviewed and published in the Journal of Criminal Justice Education in October of 2006. In this article academic dishonesty in on campus classes versus online classes was discussed. It believes that there hasn't been enough attention on the amount of academic dishonesty taking place in online courses.
Here are some things that I feel are issues for academic honesty:
-Lack of knowledge in what is considered honest and dishonest.
-Lack of concentration on academic honesty, the majority of the attention is placed on academic dishonesty.
-Lack of punishment for academic dishonesty therefore making it easier and more tempting to be dishonest.
-Over assumption that it's easier to be dishonest through online classes without any consequences. Some things that I think should be done is honor code placement such as was discussed in the first article I found. I think that if there was a concrete definition of what is considered cheating and what isn't because some people can cheat without knowing so because of their lack of knowledge.
I think that academic honesty deserves more attention simply to acknowledge students who are working hard and being compliant and honest about their work. They are taking the time to make sure their work is original and that they are not taking any credit for someone else’s hard work. I think this deserves to be acknowledged instead of overshadowed by people who are dishonest.
I believe there should be punishment when it comes to severe cases of dishonesty. When it is clear that the work has been plagiarized and taken as if it were their own, there should be no chances given. Academic dishonesty has continued to be a problem and students need to know that it will not be tolerated.
I think that the punishment for on campus students should be the same for online students. The place in which the dishonesty is taking place does not matter, dishonesty is dishonesty and all cases should be treated the same.
In order for me to avoid any issues with dishonesty I will never cut and paste. If something is an exact quote I will make sure that it is cited and listed in a bibliography to ensure that it's known it was not something derived by me. I will summarize and make sure I use my own words to explain my point. I will also use the plagiarism checker provided by the university to double check.

Post-secondary institutions are not easy, and they are not meant to be so. A large problem is that a lot of kids are pressured into going to college by their families, society, or their school. Not everybody is cut out for college, and it really just is not the right path in life for some people, which means that these “unfit” students are going to be more likely to cheat in order to satisfy themselves or anybody else. On the other hand, students that are completely prepared for college and maybe have done well their whole academic careers, still hold the possibility to break the honor code. Students are pushed within their own minds to cheat and share work so they do not have to try as hard, but still receive high grades. What they do not realize is that cheating really is not helping them in the long run. Of course, some students do have their time very well-managed, and can handle the stress, but others get stressed and break down very easily. College is known to have a rough transition from high school as far as the workload, increased pressure to do well, and the unfamiliar environment. Since cheating has been a problem in our society, there have been many attempts to rid the world of this problem. Such attempts include creating an honor code, forms of punishment, and possibly a computer-integrated classroom. The terms by which an honor code are defined as are (taken from the article titled A Question of Honor), " something that defines ethical academic conduct with the expectation that students will monitor their peers, report violations, and mete out penalties." This will only work to a certain extent however because if there are not harsh punishments, students will not fear getting caught. The fact that there are so many dishonest students is extremely disheartening and concerning. I can understand an oversight or a misuse of words, but blatant plagiarism is terrible. In fact, I would rather be accused of over citing, then to say I plagiarized.
