In the French Revolution, 1789 and the Haitian Revolution, 1791, the people wanted more rights and equalities. France wanted to gain independence from Britain and equality for nobles. Haiti wanted to gain independence from France and black landowners wanted equal rights. The main reason for these revolutions was the fight for rights and equality. One similar cause between the French and Haitian was their hunger for rights and equality. The French Revolution was influenced by Enlightenment ideals and the success of the American Revolution which caused them to start a revolution. The middle class men felt the need to have equality because they felt like they should be treated as everyone else. The absolute monarch was corrupt and needed to be fixed. The group of people at the bottom of society rebelled against those who were at the top for rights and equality. The Haitian Revolution was started as the black landowners wanted equal rights to whites and the slaves thought the harsh treatment towards them wasn’t fair. Haiti was under the monarchy of France and they wanted to be free from dictatorship. Gaining independence and equality was their fight and the reason for them to start a revolution. Both the groups felt as if they deserved more than they got. The outcomes of the revolutions differed and there were different solutions for their lifestyles. The French revolution had ended up with a limited monarchy. There are 3 different estates of society in France and the higher you were in society, the less you had to pay in taxes. At the end of the revolution, they didn’t get all the equality they wanted but the rules were more set in their favor since it was a limited monarchy. For example, they had more political representation in the parliament than before. The estates were able to meet up and discuss over matters. The Haitian revolution had a dictatorship. Although, the black landowners gained the right to own land and slaves had the right to rule they were all still under the instruction of a dictator. These groups barely got any political representation. Both France and Haiti fought for the same reason of rights and equality but had ended up with different results. Out of all the groups in both the revolutions, only some benefited from the changes while the others stayed the same. The French revolution benefited the middle class men because it gave them equality and limited monarchy. For example, the middle class mean were given rights to rule and the type of political representation they haven’t had in the past. The Haitian revolution benefited the slaves and the men of color because of emancipation and the right to rule. For example, the men of color that wanted to own land could do it now without any problems. The revolutions changed the way the people were because they were better than before. The French and Haitian revolution helped some groups to gain what they wanted. In the end, most of them did gain rights and equality but still ended up with limited monarchy and dictatorship. Nothing was perfect since there was always a hurdle to democracy and total equality. Overall, the revolutions impacted the lifestyles of the people in France and Haiti.

One example that Sheller mentions is how after the Haitian Revolution occurred, and Boyer was removed from power, “the liberal revolution failed to consolidate a new government and instability led to party fragmentation along colour lines”. What this tells the reader is that Haiti definetly struggled in order to create their new form of democracy that was to ensure more involvement in political affairs.…

The concepts of equality and liberty drove revolutionaries to expel their colonial overlords to abolish slavery and create an equal and just society. The idea of equality appealed to lower class Americans such as mestizos, mulattoes and natives, but especially inspired black slaves. Lower class Americans believed a revolution would move them up in society to the level of creoles while slaves saw revolutions as a way to gain freedom. Haiti’s declaration of independence in 1904, showed slaves’ motivations by stating that they would rather die than be forced back into in slavery and that they must create a government that protects the Haitians’ freedom.
