Interpersonal communication is probably the most important thing you'll need in life. It includes listening, responding to the emotions of others, assertive communication, asking effective questions, and refusal skills. Some verbal behaviors for listening are summarizing in your own words what the other person you were listening to said, asking questions and to express interest and to help you understand what they said more clearly, and making comments on what they said while talking. Some non verbal behaviors would be giving the person your full attention to make sure they know you're listening, sit or stand in a relaxed way, look at the person while they're talking and letting the person finish before you talk. Responding to the emotions of others would include verbal behaviors such as asking "I statements", naming the emotions described by the person, and "what did you mean when you said.." questions. Refusal skills is very important to know. Verbally just say a direct "No." Don't go along with someone because they're your friend or because they say it'll be fun. Nonverbal behaviors would be checking your body and mind for clues on how you feel. All of these things would help you to become a better person. Don't be afraid to try any of these interpersonal communication skills. Advocacy is being persuasive, taking a clear stand for a healthy choice, using information to support the choice, explaining why the stand taken is a good choice, and showing conviction about the message. For example, PSA's are public service announcements. They try to persuade you into not doing things like drugs, smoking, driving without seat belts, things like that. Advocacy is very important in life because it helps you make better decisions. All of these techniques will help you get farther and maybe even faster in life, you've just got to know how to use
