ACCOMODATION POLICY
INTRODUCTION
There has been an increased attention to workplace accommodation in relation to the growing concern about the cost of providing job accommodations.
Employers want their employees to use the correct tools on the job in order to boost productivity and thereby the bottom line. For some employees, employers may find that workplace accommodations are necessary to maximize efficiency.
Recent research done by the University of Iowa’s Law, Health Policy, and Disability Center (LHPDC) , shows that workplace accommodations are not only low cost, but also positively impact the workplace in many ways. Benefits employers receive from making workplace accommodations far outweigh the low cost. Employers reported that providing accommodations resulted in such benefits as retaining valuable employees, improving productivity and morale, reducing workers’ compensation and training costs, and improving company diversity.
The process for making such accommodations is no different in principle than implementing workplace procedures designed to build productive work environments. As with all such procedures, open lines of communication and clearly defined steps help to facilitate the process and achieve positive outcomes for both employers and employees.
While accommodation is in most cases straightforward and simple, it can also be a lengthy and complex process. In any case, it is important that the accommodation process, as well as the accommodation itself, be effective and respectful of the dignity of accommodation seekers. Both accommodation providers and persons seeking accommodation benefit from clearly understanding their roles and responsibilities, and the accommodation process.
