Three years in the Marine Corps JROTC program and I knew that I was going to be our next and first female cadet Commanding Officer. At the beginning of my junior year, my third year in the program, that was my goal to reach by the end of the year. I planned and worked hard for it; I took over staff meetings and took all of the responsibilities from my commanding officer at the time. One day, my senior Marine Instructor called me into his office after our drill practice and informed me of my new billet. He told me that I would, in fact, be our next cadet commanding officer due to my outstanding initiative and how well I have set myself apart from everyone else. I knew at that moment this would not be the most important accomplishment of my life,…

There are many types of goals. Growing up, I always dreamed of being two things: a mother and a nurse. I am blessed to have two wonderful children ages 14 and 16 and have had the privilege of being able to be a stay-at-home mom during their younger years. Now that they are older and a bit more independent, I have decided to go back to school and fulfill my goal of earning my degree in Nursing. Throughout the years of growing and maturing, I have learned how important it is to have good morals, values, goals, a passion for something, and a good education. I have not only taught my children the importance of these characteristics, but I have also shown them that regardless of one’s age or stage in life, that…

Over the past several weeks I have particularly been struggling with informal practice sessions. I was frustrated because initially I was not able to understand why I found the self-guided, informal practical gatherings with other students challenging. I felt reasonably confident with the content and with my anatomy, yet when it came to taking what I had learnt in the practical sessions and applying them informally, particularly palpations and accessory movement tests I felt lost. I found it difficult to simply watch the self-learning guide videos provided by Marilyn and put it straight into practice on a fellow student. Though the visual instructions seemed fairly straightforward, I was nervous to be the first person to put it into practice,…
