My Uncle and I had a special bond. He was the person that instilled in me the importance of loyalty to family. He raised me in Germany (Bayern Munich to be exact) until I was three years old and then reunited me with my parents in America. He returned to Germany, but quickly realized that he missed me too much. He gave up his life in Munich and came to America to be with me. Throughout my life, he was an indispensable mentor and taught me the meaning of devotion to family members.
In the spring of 2010, my Uncle’s health took a turn for the worse. I was established with my mom and dad in Maryland, but I was too far away to care for him. Just as my Uncle had uprooted his life to be with me, I decided that I would return that favor and fly him down from Arizona to Maryland to be with him. Though dealing with school, soccer and my Uncle’s health was difficult, I persevered and found a way to cope. I spent every moment of, my free time helping my Uncle. Every day, I was overwhelmed by the fear of losing him but grateful to have the opportunity to care for him.
My Uncle passed away in September 2010. Giving back to a man that had given me so much in my life made every sacrifice worthwhile, and the experience taught me the power that comes from living life according to my values.
