Avoidance learning is something we have all experienced within our lifetimes. Classical conditioning contributes to the two-factor theory because it has to do with an association between the pairing of two stimulus to create a response. Example would be pairing a tone with a shock which creates the response of fear. Reinforcement contributes to the two factory theory because once “an aversive response has been terminated it then reinforces the behavior.” (Lieberman, D.A. 2012Ch.8)
An example of my own experience would be with my mother and her boyfriend who like to drink a lot. When I was younger I would see my mother get emotionally and physically abused by this man when he would get drunk. This caused me a lot of fear. When I got older I would automatically feel fear when I found myself around men who like to drink. This would cause me to isolate myself away from setting that dealt with alcohol such as clubs, bars, or any social settings that even served alcohol. I think that this example of classical conditioning because the pairing of alcohol and men created a fear response in me that made me resort to avoidance learning. According to Lib because fear is an aversive the termination of this aversive state reinforces the behavior of me staying away from men who drink and social settings that serve alcohol.
