Carlo V. Austria

I. Overview * The case is about the Accra Beach Hotel on the Caribbean island of Barbados. West Indien Cricket Servies, an important international sporting event, sent a request to the hotel manager of the Accra Beach Hotel that concerns hosting WICS accomodation for a special rate. This rate involves a discount for 50 of the 141 rooms of the hotel. It is now then the call of the sales manager whether to accept the inquiry or not. But before the manager could decide on the matter, she should consider the welfare of the business people who will be neglected if they chose to accept the offer from WICS. On the other hand, it will bear a publicity effect as the marketing exposure through the Board if they chose to host the WICS. * II. View point

Over a period of years, Guam has experienced a boost to its tourism industry. The year 1967 was the beginning of that upward trend. that includes support from the United States. However, the decline of the Japanese economy in the 1900’s and onward severely damaged the economy of Guam. How many of us can attest to looking up a product or service online, seeing its respective pictures, only to find out that the actual product is dissimilar to the original picture? The excess room inventory in the hotel industry paired with the decline in the general tourism of Guam could only lead to failure. In other words, supply greatly outnumbered demand. Additionally, applying a “Me-too” approach to hotel operations in such conditions can have limited success. Research has shown that piggy backing on others in the industry can often lead to failure, because companies employing this tactic rarely see the need to differentiate with a product or service. It can be assumed that a “me too” company’s sole intention is to capitalize on the success of another company and the upward trend of a fad. McKenzie clearly observed and often commented on the issues he saw, like the unkempt meeting room and aged furniture. This brings out another aspect of a “me too” company in that usually those who employ this tactic place reinvestment in a lower priority. Could the Regal Carnation benefit from a shift in focus? We find that the use of our gut when making decisions can have a positive effect. In contrast, the McKenzie’s failed to follow their gut…

The new general manager of the Christopher Hotel will need to consider many points when planning a strategy to increase the hotel’s market penetration rate. One of these points is the performance and marketing strategies of local competitors, if the competitors are out-performing with higher rates then they are utilizing a niche in the market which is something the Christopher should consider. Networking with local businesses will also be crucial. Corporate rate agreements can drive business even with discounted prices they add great revenues to a hotel through food and beverage as well as convention space. Another focus should be the sales staff of the hotel. As a sales associate you must be able to contribute greatly to a hotel and accommodate guests better than all others since you are the one selling a property, often site-unseen.…

Rosewood’s brand awareness was low, known mainly to those within the hospitality industry—as shown in Exhibit 7, the majority of guests who were asked about Rosewood had no idea what it was, and the employees themselves even admitted that their brand was something of a secret, known only to the travel agents who have been saddled with the responsibility of the only marketing the brand gets: word-of-mouth. The majority of the travel agents who book Rosewood hotels for their guests say that those who are in-the-know will go back.…

Anton Cahoon left a successful career in manufacturing to purchase an independent motel, near an interstate highway exit, a short distance from a rapidly expanding resort area. Mr. Cahoon relied only upon passersby as clientele with little other advertising. For the first two years operations went smoothly, however the Goodnight Inn had not become profitable. While occupancy rates stabilized near 55%, they were still well below the industry average of 68%. Anton had run his motel avoiding “unnecessary expenses”, and as a result had a 40% price advantage over the full-service hotels in his market area. Customer surveys found the GoodNight Inn acceptable. After much thought, Anton has begun to consider affiliating with a either Holiday Inn or Days Inn, both offering the advantages of a central reservation system, and their national marketing presence.…

Their main reason concern will be that they have very little or no control over their property or employees. This power has been taken away from managers and given to employees. This is an important decision that they believe they should be the one to make as it impacts the bottom line and it may be a reflection on them. In terms of revenue: it was forecasted that the WICB would more than likely pay the average lower rates ($140-$150) that the hotel offered for the rooms. In addition to that, they presumed that the team members and officials would eat elsewhere because of the per diem budget they were placed on rather than eating at the hotel. On the other hand, their regular customers who frequent there for a number of meals such as breakfast accounting for 80% of all guests and 30% of them who dines in were a much promising crowd. On average, both vacationers and corporate customers spend about $8 per person for breakfast and about $25 VAT inclusive, per person for dinner. They also wanted 50 rooms, each at $130 per night, including two additional suites at no extra cost. The WICB requested that the hotel do the team’s laundry services at no additional cost. Cherita estimated that it would cost the hotel $20 per day to do it in-house as oppose to sending it to an outside source which would cost them about $200.…

David Bart, General Manager of the Plaza Inn, received a letter from the hotel association of which the Plaza Inn was a member. The letter stated that the hotel’s service levels did not measure up and that the front desk and reservations, two critical departments, received the worst ratings among all of the association’s properties. Unless the management of the Plaza Inn could submit a plan for guest service improvement and pass the next inspection scheduled in six months, its membership would be rescinded. In fact, at the Plaza Inn, the inability to efficiently expedite phone calls and respond to guest needs was troubling to Bart, not only from a guest service perspective, but also from the standpoint of lost revenue.…
