1. What should you always wear to protect your eyes when you are in the chemistry laboratory? You should wear safety glasses to protect your eyes when you are in the chemistry laboratory.
2. Should you add acid to water or water to acid?
You should always add acids to water.
3. Where should you dispose of broken glass?
You should dispose broken glass in a protective container.
4. What should you do if you spill a chemical on your hand?
If the chemical spill is on a small area you must immediately flush the area with a large amount of water and then wash it with soap. Remember to check the MSDS for the chemical and follow all instructions.

For directions click on Experiment 1, Neutrialization of Acids and Bases Procedure in your lab manual.
While conducting the experiment, fill in the table (2) below:
Weight Boat
Chemical Contents
Litmus Results
Additional Observations
A
5ml of Water
The litmus paper didn’t really change it stayed a purple color.
The paper seemed to stay a purple color.
B
.5g of Sodium Bicarbonate and 5ml of water
The litmus paper turned blue.
The paper once dipped in the solution turned a dark blue immediately.
C
5ml of Acetic Acid (Vinegar)
The litmus paper turned red.
The paper gradually turned red after being dipped in.
Neutralization of an Acid (table 3)
Amount Of Base
Litmus Results
1 mL
The paper stayed red
2 mL
The paper still was red.
3 mL
The paper began to have a blue tint to it.
4 mL
The paper slowly tuned blue.
5 mL
The paper turned blue.
Post-Lab Questions
1. State your hypothesis (developed in Step 8) here. Be sure to include what you think the pH will be, and why.
I think the pH of weigh boat C will still be acidic and stay the red color because only a small amount of weigh boat B was added to it. I believe that it will take more ml of weigh boat B before the content is neutralized and turns blue.
2. What is a neutralization reaction?
A neutralization reaction is a chemical reaction where an acid and a base interact with the formation of salt.
3. When might neutralization reactions be used in a laboratory setting?
Neutralization reactions may be used in a laboratory setting to remove the safety hazard.
4. At what point was the acetic acid in weigh boat “C” neutralized?
The acetic acid in weigh boat C was fully neutralized when the entire 5ml of the contents in boat b were added to it.
